They are the thin gold line.
At any time of the day or night, they may have to deal with a stressful and traumatic crisis over the phone or hear one of their officers go down. They'll have to control their emotions and do what needs to be done. And afterwards, when it's all over, they'll have to pick up the next call and do it all over again.
"Why?" you ask?
They don't do it for the money or fame.
It's their voice in the darkness that gives hope to those who really need it. Dispatchers. 911 operators. Communication officers. Whatever you call them, they are unsung heroes.
And hopefully someday, I will be able to stand among them, answering those traumatic phone calls calmly, efficiently and professionally.
To be the calm voice in a chaotic crisis. The first of the first responders. The thin gold line. 911 dispatchers.
