Sarah's POV
I rubbed Cheryl's back as I didn’t know what else to do. It killed me to see my best friend hurting so much. I was fuming inside and wanted nothing more than to give Kimberley a piece of my mind. Cheryl finally fell asleep, tired from all the crying and the previous sleepless night.
I turned off the lights and silently crept out of the room. I was glad Cheryl’s parents weren’t home yet, as they would surely want to know why she was crying her eyes out like that. And I couldn't imagine myself telling them that a girl had broken their daughter’s heart.
And speaking of that particular girl, I walked determinedly to my car, started it and headed straight to Kimberley’s house. I knew Cheryl would kill me if she found out, but I had to do it. I parked my car in front of the big mansion and walked to the front door and rang the bell. A maid opened the door.
"Yes?”
"May I please speak to Kimberley?”
“Who shall I say it is?” asked the maid.
“Just say it’s someone from school and it’s very important. I’ll wait for her right here.”
“Just a moment please.” The maid partially closed the door and disappeared inside. A couple of minutes later, Kimberley came to the door.
I gasped when I saw her.
“What the hell happened to you?”
Kimberley had a bad cut on the right of her forehead right above a black eye. She looked really tired and her eyes were all puffy and red as if she’d been crying.
She at first seemed stunned to see me at her doorstep but that quickly changed to anger.
“What are you doing here?” she asked coldly, ignoring my question.
I snapped out of my stupor and shot back at her, getting right to the point.
“Why are you doing this to Cheryl?”
“Would you just stop your charade already?!” shouted Kimberley. “I know about you two!”
“What charade?” I asked her in confusion. “and what do you mean about us two?!”
“I don’t have time for this.”
“Then just tell me what you mean!”
“I saw you! Alright! I saw you at that coffee shop hugging and kissing in broad daylight!”
“What…? …Oh!” Then I understood what she was talking about and couldn’t help but laugh at the whole misunderstanding. She shot me a murderous look.
“That’s the last laugh you and your girlfriend are going to have at my expense.”
“No, Kimber wait. You don’t underst…” I started, just to have the door slammed right in my face.
I stood there staring at the door for a few seconds and then decided that Kimberley just wasn’t going to listen to me. I went back to my car. This explained a lot. Kimberley must’ve been passing by the coffee shop when Cheryl and me were hugging and when I had turned my head and kissed Cheryl on the cheek.
I understood how someone would think we were actually kissing if they saw us from a certain angle from outside. Kimberley must really love Cheryl to get all jealous like that, I thought with a tender smile. But it didn’t explain why Kimberley had that black eye and that bruise on her forehead.
I drove back to Cheryl’s house. I rang the door bell and was about to knock forcefully in order to wake my sleeping friend, but her dad opened the door.
"Oh, hi Simon.”
“Hi darlin' . If you want Cheryl, I just checked on her and she’s sleeping.”
“Yeah, but she told me to pass by and wake her up anyways.” I lied.
“Oh, ok then.” He said, letting me in. ”You know the way.”
“Thanks.” I smiled at him and tried my best not to run up the stairs.
I went into Cheryls room, switched on the lights and closed the door behind me. I sat on her bed next to her and gently started shaking her.
