Jackie's POV

I must have dosed off sometime after Sam had, because when I woke up, I found my neck in the worst posible position with the worst cramp I've ever experienced in my life.

Glancing around the car, I see Sam still slouched in his seat, which leaves Dean to still be driving.

How Dean drives for hours on end like that non stop I will probably never understand.

Must be the beer.

I lift my head off of the window where it rested for god knows how long and let out a stretch while wiping my face with my hand.

"Morning, sunshine."

I glace at Dean through the rear view mirror and give him a straight face. I'm not really a morning person. According to my watch, its 5:35 AM, and that definitely qualifies as morning.

Through the window I can see the sun just beginning to rise over the what seems to be hundreds and hundreds of miles of empty farmland.

How does Dean even know where we're going?

"Where are we?" I ask.

"Just passed through Greenville, Indiana, which means we are now..." I watch as he looks at the land fly by us, with nothing but miles and miles of crop land. "...in the middle of nowhere."

"Hmm, great observation." I smile and sink back into the seat. Dean and I sit in silence with nothing but the sound of Sam's light breathing and the impala's roaring engine to keep our ears occupied.

Five hours and countless miles later, we've reached Kentucky and had stopped for breakfast at a diner as soon as we crossed the boarder. Sam is now driving while Dean gets his desperately needed sleep.

All is quiet in the impala aside from the radio's quiet tunes. But something is keeping me on edge, even in this peaceful silence.

"Hey, Sam?"

"Yeah?" His eyes meet mine through the mirror when he glances up from the endless stretch of road in front of him.

"Do you and Dean ever take a break from hunting?" I ask.

Sam let's out an exasperated laugh. "Believe me, I've tried. We've both tried," he says, motioning to a sleeping Dean. "I guess we could never get away from the family business." There's a slight pause, but then he continues. "Its like wherever we go, whoever we meet, something always goes wrong."

Once he realizes what I've asked, his face immediately becomes one of concern. "Why do you ask? Is there something wrong?"

I let out a low sigh.

"I don't know, I just can't- I can't keep leaving my dad every time I go out to hunt. I'm not stupid, his leg isn't going to get any better, its clear to both him and me. He just won't admit it." I pause, stumbling for words. "I want him out of this life. He's gone through so much, hunting has basically taken everything away from him. I'm all he's got left and I keep leaving him. I know its ridiculous to even think that someone can just leave this life because there is no way in hell you can escape it. You can't escape the things you've seen or the horrible things you've done. But my dad's suffered enough, I just want him to be happy."

Taking a deep breath, I'm glad that's off my chest and out in the open air. I've been pondering over those thoughts for far too long now.

"Jackie, I'm not going to lie to you and tell you everything is going to be fine. Because you're right, this life is so messed up. But its our life and we live it the way we've grown to love it deep down inside. Trust me when I say that if this wasn't the life you were destined to live, you wouldn't be here. Same goes for your dad. He may not have chosen this life for himself, but that's the path he took. And just look where it got him; his daughter's a freaking legend."
