Jackie's POV
I sit outside in the cool weather for almost half an hour before I hear the screen door creak open, but the porch lights stay off. I don't turn around to see who it is, I only keep my eyes fixed on the dark space in front of me.
I feel a blanket wrap around my shoulders, and someone sits next to me, keeping their right arm wrapped around my shoulders.
"It's freezing out here."
Dean lightly squeezes my shoulders and I send him a small smile of thanks for the blanket.
Dean pulls me into him and I end up resting my head on his shoulder, my hands gripping the blanket tightly.
"Did Cas leave?" I ask quietly.
"Yeah. He said he had 'heavenly manners' to attend to."
I lightly roll my eyes at that.
"He told me to tell you he apologizes. Again. He didn't mean to upset you."
I laugh into his shoulder. "I should be apologizing to him. I shoved him against a wall and he still helped us." I pause before adding, "Cas is weird."
Dean laughs back at my remark. "That he is."
We both sit quietly, and I feel Dean's arm sit firmly across my shoulders even after a good ten minutes.
"You know, I didn't want to believe Cas at first. But then I started thinking. I keep replaying that night in my head over and over. To be honest, I barely remembered anything until last night. It's like my dad dying sparked all the little details I forgot. I keep remembering what that guy told my dad and I, how he stared at me in the eyes as he said it. And the more I think, the more I believe he's right. Cas is right. But I still don't know what that means."
Dean looks down at me as I talk, and he doesn't look away even when I finish.
"Jackie, you have been put in the worst position possible, and people expect you to be okay in the end. And once everything is over and you've managed to get through it all, you won't even be sure how you did it or if everything is really over. But the only thing you'll know, and that I know is one hundred percent true, is that you won't be the same person you were when you walked in. I can already see that Jackie. But that's really the only thing you know right now. You'll get through this Jackie. You've got Bobby, and you've got Sam and I. And believe me none of us are going to leave you hanging. Ever."
I don't know what I expected Dean to say or do, but an inspirational speech was not something I could have predicted. I don't even think Dean expected any of that to fly out of his mouth. So I just nod my head and put my head back down on his shoulder.
"Something tells me that you know all of that better than anyone else would."
"Yeah, probably."
After a moment, I decide to lighten up the conversation. "So we done with the chick-flick moment or..?"
Dean laughs again and lightly shoves me. "Shut up."
"Listen," he starts, then looks at his watch. "It's midnight. Why don't you head upstairs and catch some shut eye. I'll take the couch."
"Two things," I say. "One: it's only 11:59." I show him my own watch with a small smirk, then watch as he rolls his eyes. "Two: I'm not gonna make you sleep on the couch, you won't fit. Just take the bed."
"Damn, aren't you a stubborn one. Jackie, you are going to get a good nights sleep on an actual bed if I have to tie you to it. Now come on, its freezing out here."
