(A/N: Just a fair warning, I have no clue how EMF detectors work, so bear with me when I mention them in this chapter! Thanks😊 enjoy!)
Jackie's POV
Sam gives me a careful side glance at the sound of the folder in my hands bending and making a popping noise.
I don't remove my eyes from their remote spot on my father's chest, even as Dr. Jay's pager buzzes and he begins to speak.
"You'll have to excuse me, I'm needed down in the ER. Please, take your time, everything you need should be in that folder. If you need anything else feel free to call my office or ask the front desk. They may be able to direct you where you need o be."
Sam nods. "Thank you, we'll let you know what we find."
Dr. Jay makes his leave and at the click of the heavy door shutting behind him, I close my eyes, finally putting down the fake facade I'd been holding up since I stepped foot into the building.
"Jackie?" Sam asks quietly.
"Hey, Jackie." He pulls the manilla folder out of my tightened grip and sets it down on one of the metal tables in the room.
He grabs my shoulders gently but my eyes still haven't left my father's face. Beside the fact that you can see the outline of the gash on his forehead, he looks peaceful. But all I can think about is how unpeacfully he died.
"What does all of this even mean?" I finally get out, my voice cracking slightly from myself holding I tears.
Sam shakes his head solemnly. "I have no idea. This is... I don't even know. I've never even heard of anyone doing this to a hunter. Yeah hunters are killed all the time by the supernatural, but if Cas is right in saying this was an angel, I have no idea."
I think Sam notices how my eyes dropped back down to the floor once he told me that, because he quickly begins to reassure me.
"But Jackie, we're going to figure this out. No one messes with the Winchesters."
I can't help but let a small smile out, but not a very enthusiastic one.
"But I'm not a Winchester," I point out.
"Yeah, well, no one messes with any acquaintances of the Winchesters. Especially if her name's Jackie Kaiser."
With one last squeeze on the shoulder Sam steps back and reaches for the manilla folder, beginning to flip through the pages and pages of paperwork.
I make my way carefully over to the side of the table, close enough as to where I could touch my father's cold hand.
Somewhat reluctantly, I reach out and lightly touch his cool skin. I'm a hunter, and I am in no way unfamiliar with the reality of dead bodies sadly, however the shock of coolness from his stiff hand still managed to give me my own wave of chills down my spine.
"I've never even seen these symbols before," Sam states, acknowledging the sigil.
"Me neither," I quietly agree. "You think Cas would recognize them? I guess he would be the best person the ask."
"Yeah, guess so," he complies. Reaching into his pocket, Sam pulls out his phone and reluctantly begins to take pictures of my father's chest so he could show Cas them later. I have no obligations, I know what he's doing is absolutely necessary, but it still feels so out of place.
