CHAPTER 13
Morgan's POV:
Speed- it explained so much about me and how I had managed to get away from him each time. It was always a close call, but for some previously unexplained reason he had only been able to catch me once. Yet, at the same time simply thinking about the word and its possibilities left me with even more unanswered questions.
Jet was once more standing at the entrance to the woods just like he had been the previous day. A trail of coloured markers was placed deep in the woods in a linear pattern. It was clear that I had a busy day of training ahead of me.
I pulled my jumper over my head, knowing that Jet's plan would soon have me warmed up. He took out a small silver stopwatch from his bag, two red buttons stuck out at either side of the timer. He reached into his bag once more and pulled out his small notebook and a pen. He placed the notebook into his front right pocket and attached the pen onto one of his belt buckles for safe keeping.
“I hope you slept well last night because you are going to need all your energy!” he laughed as he gestured jokingly towards the woods. “I will need you to stay on the outside of the cones at all times. The trail will take you into the heart of the woods and then back her again,” he explained carefully.
“I understand but you could be waiting a while though,” I said as I stared at the coloured dots trailing off into the distance.
“I doubt it somehow,” he replied. “On the count of three, okay?” I readied myself by crouching on the ground and placing my hands in front of me. My left leg was stretched out behind me waiting to kick the ground for the initial start. He counted upwards slowly. Each second dragged out as the energy built up inside of me. “Three!”
My leg kicked against the surface of the woods, scattering the leaves that had been lying peacefully beneath it. I pushed myself as hard as I could go; I willed myself to speed up. Despite my effort I could tell that I was still running at a normal speed. Jet had been wrong. Any hope than I had had suddenly shattered inside of me.
The energy thundered through my body and the blood seemed to rush towards my head. I was travelling faster than before, but it was nothing special- nothing extraordinary. My legs kicked against the ground harder and harder, forcing me forwards.
Each step pushed me forwards, the power inside of me had peaked and I felt as if I was almost unbreakable.
A click sounded to my right, my eyes were closed. My heart was beating against my chest as if it were trying to escape the confined space around it.
“Here, drink this,” Jet said as he threw a sports bottle filled with water to me. The sound of his voice startled me; there was no way I could have been back already. I had passed out and never even moved; it was the most obvious explanation.
“What happened?” I asked, curious to know where and why I had collapsed and how Jet had brought me back here again.
“You completed it in 16.849 seconds,” he announced as he looked at his stopwatch so that he could tell me the exact time. “I could barely see you moving, you were just a blur of colour!”
“I actually did it?” I questioned in disbelief. He nodded and sat beside me on the leafy ground. I stared at the stopwatch in disbelief as he had handed it to me. I looked up at the course again, amazed at how I had apparently managed to run it in such a quick time.
“Are you tired?” he asked as I gasped for breath. The adrenaline that had previously propelled me forwards and had suddenly zapped everything from my body. It felt like every drop of energy had been drained from my body.
