CHAPTER 16

Gorran's POV:

The barrel of the gun was pressed firmly against my left temple. Its cold circular casing pressed further into my head with increasing pressure as Steve’s other arm held onto my waist so that I could not move.

I could feel my heart was racing inside of me; my voice box was trying to scream, but no sound came out. My entire body was numb. I felt nothing except for that one small spot on my temple which could no longer exist in a short time if I wasn't careful. I knew the power that the gun possessed, I had seen it first hand after all.

It would only take one small movement to cease my existence. I would no longer be able to move, think or feel; I would be no more. The memories inside my loved ones mind would become exactly that- memories; we would no longer be able to share them together and laugh at the times that we had had.

Stopping those thoughts of my imminent death was an impossibility. With a weary groan, I turned my head to the side. I could not bear to look at either Steve or Lucas.

I looked directly into the eyes of the only person who stood a chance of saving me. How she had found me was a mystery, but the important thing for us to get away safely first. She could explain it to me once we were both safe.

“Take another step and…” Steve warned as he pushed the gun even further into my head. It felt like it had become lodged inside my brain. “And I will blow his brains out.”

“No, you won’t," she laughed. "What used would he be to you if he was dead?” My eyes widened in horror. The way April had said it; it sounded almost like a challenge.

“Yes, but he will be no use to you either. He stays with me while you leave quietly and I may leave him live or else I can just kill him now.” Steve had given her his ultimatum. It seemed like either way there was no happy ending to it. He appeared to be certain that he was going to murder me in both cases, it was simply a matter of time. Only April could buy me that time, I had no power over Steve's decisions.

April may not have believed that Steve was capable of killing me, but I had no doubt whatsoever. I knew that a single movement or word by me could change my faith so I stayed silent. I stood like a statue as I wished that it was all a dream. I knew that a single distraction could cause Steve to press his finger onto that trigger and the prospect of it terrified me.

“I am sure that we can settle this,” April urged as she began to sense the tension that filled the air surrounding us. Lucas stood between her and Steve and me, blocking her from making any sudden movement. Her face was completely free from any expression.

I knew that April would have some sort of plan worked out already, but as they stared directly at each other while I waited to find out if it would work; each second felt like an eternity. April could simply walk away and leave me to die if she choose to and there was nothing I could do to save myself. She was my only source of hope and she appeared to remain unfazed by the highly charged situation which we had now both found ourselves part of.

“Of course we can... You leave now and I will not kill this precious superhero boy here,” Steve mocked. His calloused hand stroked the top of my head slowly. Every nerve in my body was repulsed by him. I wanted to fight against him, but I knew that I stood no chance. I had to rely on April to make her next move.

“There is one small piece of your plan that I don’t agree with though,” April replied. She remained so calm, it was the same as she had been when the attacker had first appeared in the car park. It was a common occurrence for her in her line of work. Was this going to become an everyday event in my life? If I survived, would I constantly have people after me? I would no longer be able to trust anyone.
