CHAPTER 24
Gorran's POV:
It was time for my second day of training. Yesterday had not gone as well as I had hoped that it would; in fact it was distarious to say the least, futile even! However, today was a new day and I had to move on from yesterday's problems. Today was a new day and sitting here in my room moaning to myself was not likely to improve my powers in any way. April believed in me and I assured myself that I would not leave her down again. It had been my decision to come and train with MI5 and I knew that I would have to take full advantage of each and every challenge that I was presented with.
I had just received a phone call from reception, informing me that Charlie had been called away for some urgent matter. Although, I had enjoyed my lessons yesterday, the prospect of having extra time to train today still made me immensely excited.
I opened the thick mahogany door of my wardrobe and quickly scanned through the various pieces of clothing- some of which I had brought with me and others which MI5 had bought for me. The collection seemed to grow larger every time that I opened my door. My room was cleaned daily and searched for any devices or bugs which may have been hidden in it. At first, I hated the idea of somebody else going through my personal things, but I had already become accustomed to it. It was for my own safety and after being kidnapped once before, the knowledge that I was safe was something that I could wholly embrace.
I tried to gauge what the day's weather would be like from the temperature in the room. However, I soon noticed that the thermostat was set to a constant temperature which made this an impossible feat. Eventually, I settled on my clothing. I knew that I would be inside training, but I did not know how active I would be- I needed something which I would be warm in, but which I could also remove if I had to run vigorously or if I became too warm. I slipped the thick grey tracksuit pants over my pale legs, enjoying the warmth of the fur inside them, compared with the thin pyjamas that I had chosen to wear during the night, they were like standing inside a large fluffy cumulus cloud. My blue T-shirt was short shelved, I choose a thin navy jumper with a light hood. I realised that my choice was more affected by the style of the clothing than actually preventing me becoming drenched in one of England's many rain showers; as long as April kept our training indoors I would be okay.
Slowly, I made my way down the stairs and out of reception towards the building where I had previously agreed to meet April. It was opposite to the building with the 3D equipment that we had been using yesterday. I pushed it open, wondering what could be on the other side of the door, .
April was sitting bolt upright on a leather covered swivel chair rapidly tapping at the laptop which sat on the table in front of her. Her face was serious as her fingers attacked the black keys of the keyboard.
"Is everything alright April?" I questioned nervously. It was only then that she raised her eyes from the message on her screen. She nodded to the chair across from her indicating that I should sit down and then immediately returned to her hurried typing.
I waited patiently wondering what was more important to April than working on my training. I was puzzled, but from her expression I could tell that it was something very serious so I decided it would be best not to question her further.
Finally, she took a deep breath and stopped typing. She looked at me with a concern. I had to admit that her facial expression alone scared, but I chose not to dwell on it.
"Are we still training today?" I promoted instead. She itched the back of her neck- something which I had always been told was a sign of nervousness.
"I suppose we could," she replied hesitantly. Her face was still plastered with a mixture of fright, unease and worry. Her feelings seemed to diffuse into my body as I studied the creases which had formed across her face. All of a sudden, she snapped out of it and returned to her usual self, the April whom I had become accustomed to.
"Today, we are going to work on your telekinetic powers. I have devised a few short tests which will help us to learn more about them." She was acting like nothing had happened when it clearly had. I could only hope that it wasn't something too serious.
I agreed despite wishing that we would work on my invisibility powers instead, but April had previously explained how temperamental my powers could be. I would be able to train each of them in time, but if I focused too much on one of them, it could drain the energy from my other power and I would be at risk of losing it. This was a terrifying prospect for me as I knew that each power had different advantages which could help me when I needed them.
I nodded as I straightened my position in the chair- adjusting my posture until I was in line with the curve of the chair.
"Firstly, I have two cups, I need you to switch their positions without using your hands. You must slide each cup to the other side of the table using only your mind," she explained.
This seemed like a simple task for anybody with telekinetic powers, but I soon began to see the difficulty behind it. I had become accustomed to moving things through the air, never simply by sliding them across a surface. It was a less artistic way to use the powers, but I could see the benefits of knowing how to do it- an enemy would likely not notice an object moving along the ground whereas they would certainly notice one flying through the air.
I tensed my brain and furrowed my eyebrows as I concentrated on the task at hand. I stared at the green cup to my left hand side first. I focused my attention on the base of it, mentally telling it to move. Just as I was beginning to give up hope, the cup shifted slightly. I felt a surge of energy pulsating through my veins as the cup slid leisurely along the table. The first cup tapped gently against the other; I blinked, to cease my connection with the cup.
Next I focused on the second cup and repeated my actions exactly as I had previously done, it worked perfectly.
The second test that April had organised was far more difficult one. She held out a bottle of water and explained that she was going to pour it into the bowl underneath. However, I had to try and divert the flow of the water into the cup beside it instead. This was one of the hardest things for a telekinetic to perform. I only had one bottle of water to practice with as well. I was aware that the limited amount of water meant that I would have to act quickly. Nevertheless, I felt full of confidence and once more, I felt the energy gather inside of me and race through my circulatory system as it had previously done.
I focused my attention as April removed the cap. Her face quickly lit up with pure and utter astonishment as the water's path began to change and flow into the cup. I was almost mesmerized by it, but I was determined not to break the connection with it; instead I focused all of my attention at the top of the cup.
Once the bottle was empty, I slouched back down into the chair, delighted at my achievement but, completely drained from all the effort it had required.
"That was breath-taking Gorran. I have never seen anybody perform this test as efficiently as you have just done," she congratulated me while holding out the full cup for me. I stared with wonder at the empty bowl in front of me as I gulped down the liquid; water had never tasted so sweet to me.
"Thanks April. I did not think I would be able to do it at all." I paused for a short time as I tried to imprint the moment into my long-term memory.
"This breakthrough provides us with so many prospects for future training and uses," she announced. "We can begin working with the weather, rain and such. This bring so many new possibilities Gorran." April exclaimed excitedly, hugging me warmly.
