CHAPTER 12

Gorran's POV:

An insistent tapping on my door awoke me much to my dismay. Quickly, I pulled on my nearby jumper as I went to answer the door.

“Gorran, you should know better,” April shouted. I looked around the small room wondering what I had possibly done wrong. “I could have been anybody and you didn't even check before you opened the door to me.”

“Who else would it be?” I joked, underestimating her anger at my sheer lack of security.

“Do I have to tell you everything again?” she replied looking me up and down. I could tell that the anger was more directed at herself than at me. “There are people after you. They could have been outside the door and you would have allowed them to simply walk in and take you.”

“I’m sorry,” I replied. I looked down at the ground as I tried to avoid any eye contact with April’s burning orbs. I had no idea that opening a door could cause me so much trouble.

“Come on! We need to go now. H.Q. just rang to say that their souce has warned them that the gang are getting closer to us,” she explained. At that exact moment, the severity of the situation hit me like a rock. The people that she had been speaking of were tracking at me and they would not stop for anything in their search for me. At that moment, I almost wished that I had never had these powers, that I had my old life back.

“Give me two minutes. I'll just pack up my clothes,” I said as I placed the cover neatly back onto my bed and smoothed my sheets. April's face began to soften and it slowly formed into a smile as she began to walk towards the door.

“Good. I will be next door when you are ready.” She left the room and I was alone once more. It was just me and my thoughts. I packed quickly. After learning that the gang was on their way, I had to admit that I was scared without her. I knew that April would protect me, but without her I was an open target, a sitting duck.

With a final scan of the room I was ready to leave. The distance between our rooms was short, but yet I ran the few metres to her door. My hand tapped quickly, but quietly on her door as I tried not to draw any unnecessary attention to myself. Her eye peeked through the small, orb-shaped hole in the door. I could hear the rusted chain being removed and the handle being pushed downwards.

“Are you ready?” she asked as she placed her small black rucksack on her back. I nodded in response. My heart was still beating quicker than it should have been. I took great comfort in having April beside me once more. My worries for my safety began to ease slowly and the pace of my heartbeat followed suite.

We made our way down the aged and worn stairs and out into the car park. The lights of the car flashed brightly as she unlocked it.

A flash of black was behind us, April turned suddenly to face it. Her eyes widened in fear. She reached into the side of her waistband and when her hand came back into view she was holding a black, shiny container. A gun!

“Gorran, get into the car now,” she shouted as the person completely clothed in black came closer. I stood still; the shock was preventing me from making the slightest movements. “Now!” she ordered.

Finally my legs kicked into action. I ran to the car and flung open the door. The locks clicked back down as pulled the door shut behind me. All I could do now was watch as I remained concoded in the car while April proceeded with her duty of protecting me.

The person in black who had been running towards April had seen me enter the car. His head swivelled in my direction. A ski mask was pulled lover his face, covering it and hiding his identity.. Two small holes were cut into the thick material so he they could see. He was getting closer to the car. I was trapped. There was no way for me to escape. His brown eyes stared straight towards me unmoving, unblinking like an animal's as it hunted its prey.
