"What do you mean he's dead." I almost screamed as Shawn drove steadily through the main road, we were now long gone from the commotion that was happening at the country side.
"Maddie, no questions, I'll explain everything later, just keep an eye on Cole and make sure he doesn't throw up." I sighed loudly. The asshole Shawn was back.
I placed my head against the window. The sky was dark, and I counted each car that passed by before my vision blurred and sleep took over my mind.
~
"Come on Maddie wake up." Shawn's voice blasted, dangerously close to my ear.
I woke up immediately opening both eyes as I looked up at him.
"Where are we?" I asked sleepily, my eyes finding it hard to adjust in the darkness.
"No time for questions get up." He said impatiently leaning over me to grab Cole, who was still under the influence of alcohol.
I stumbled out the car as Shawn threw Cole over his shoulder before tossing the keys to me.
"Lock the car, I'll meet you at the reception." He started making his way up the stairs of a small bed and breakfast hotel.
I yawned as I pressed the red button on the keys before I heard the satisfactory click of the doors locking.
I then trudged up the steps after Shawn.
~
"Sorry sir, you need to pay with a card here." The bored looking receptionist stated as he glared at Shawn.
Shawn had put Cole down and he was now awake and sober enough to stand on his own.
"What do you mean I have to pay with a card, I'm offering you a hell of a lot of money here dude, just take it and give us a room!" Shawn snapped trying to control his temper as he leaned his body forward against the desk.
"Sorry sir, I'll have to ask you to leave if you do not show some co-operation." The receptionist replied in a bored tone.
Shawn huffed loudly as he ran his hand through his light hair.
I made my way up to the desk.
"Please, give us a room, you have no idea how much it will mean to us." I said in the most sardonic voice I could muster and to my surprise burst out crying.
The man at the desk looked uncomfortable shifting his gaze from Shawn to Cole as I sniffed and wiped the back of my hand over the fake tears streaming down my face.
He was probably confused as to why I was dressed in male clothing. But he didn't say anything.
He quickly started typing something into his computer, his eyes flickering left to right as he stared at the computer screen, before handing us a small envelope containing a room key.
"Room fifteen." He finally said.
"Thank you sir, you are very kind." I sobbed as I took hold of the envelope.
"Don't get used to it." He spat, but couldn't hide the sympathetic look he had plastered on his face.
I smiled a watery smile towards him before nodding my head thankfully.
"We won't." I smiled as I made my way out the reception hall.
"Thank you sir, you are very kind." Shawn mocked mimicking my voice as he came up behind me with Cole by his side.
"I know I'm amazing." I said drying the wetness from my eyes.
"Room 15?" Shawn asked pointing to the front of a wooden door that had the numbers fifteen painted on it.
"Yea, this is the one." I said checking the envelope.
I pulled out the key and unlocked the door.
The room was a medium sized En-Suite with two single beds that were separated by a small oak bedside table in-between. There was a huge window that covered most of the side wall giving us an excellent view of the city.
Shawn made his way to the first bed before dumping Coles sleeping body on top of it.
He began to remove Coles shoes and top leaving him in just navy jeans as he tucked him up into bed.
Cole opened his left eye a bit and smiled a genuine smile, not a smirk or grin, but a proper grateful Cole smile that made his left cheek dimple deeply.
"Thanks dad." He said before closing both eyes again.
I couldn't help but smile at how adorable he was, Cole the wannabe player with an attitude, was now being tucked into bed like a five year old boy by his best friend. I couldn't help but extend my smile.
Shawn looked up at me giving me a half smile. Running his fingers through his white hair.
I noticed the dark circles under his eyes.
"What now?" He finally asked as he sat down on the edge of the other bed and brought his hand to the collar of his shirt before pulling it off in one swift movement.
I sighed as I took off the flannel and snapback I was wearing, removing the clothes that had been stuffed up my shirt, leaving me in a black vest top.
Shawn leaned over and put his head in his hands, before sighing.
I made my way over to him and sat down gingerly beside him, before wrapping both arms around his muscular torso. He stayed silent for a while before breaking down into barely audible sobs.
I had never seen an older boy cry despite the fact that I lived with mostly females and my dad.
But there was something about seeing a man cry that made me feel scared deep down.
I squeezed him tighter as I placed my head against his shoulder.
His head remained in his hands as his shoulders shook slowly.
We stayed in this position for a few minutes before I felt him loosen up underneath me and his shoulders relax. I then pulled him back onto the bed too tired to do anything as I fell gently into a deep slumber on Shawn's chest.
