"Ok, class", Miss Vasquez said, "We have a new student in our class. He just joined Ridgeton a couple days ago so please try to make him feel welcome."

"Zack, you can come in!" She said as a boy walked in. He smiled and winked at a couple of girls as they sighed.

It was the hunk! The hunk from the detention that I saw in the office! He's joining my class! My class!!

"Mr. Everton, you may take the empty seat next to miss Summers" Ms. Vasquez said, pointing next to me.

I almost fainted! Oh, he was so cute!! And he smelled like happiness and all that's good in the world. For the first time in my life, I wanted to go hug Ms. Vasquez! Wait... I take that back.

When class ended, He met me in the hallway.

  "You're Mel, right? From detention?"

  "Yeah! That's me."

"How'd you make it in? To detention?"

"Forgot to turn in a-" wait that sounded dumb. I needed to seem more bad- girl-ish than that. I forgot to turn in a homework assignment? That was only half the reason I was in...

  That's when I remembered...

"I pushed everything off of Principal Rae's desk on to the floor."

  Much better!

"Man, that's dope!" He said and gave me a high five.

Dope? What does that even mean?

"What about you?" I asked, "How'd you get detention on your first day?"

  He chuckled a little.

"I may or may not have Called Principal Rae a sir"

I laughed. "Now that's dope!" We high-fived again.

"Gotta get to class", he said. "See you later Mel!"

"See you later Zack!" I said as he walked way.

There were only a few people in detention today. Me, Hazel, Will (Hazel's friend), Jay (Hazel's friend), Zack, and a couple other kids.

  And Ms. Vasquez.

We weren't allowed to get up, talk, cough, sneeze, move, or breathe too loudly. It was torture. It was even worse having 90- year- old Ms. Vasquez staring in to your soul with her dead, red eyes.

Ok, maybe that was a small exaggeration, but it was mostly true.

After the hour, which felt like a day was over, everyone evacuated the room as quickly as possible. Fat Danny just let out a big one and stunk up the whole classroom. I swear I could see fumes!

On my way home from school, I stopped at the store to pick up the newest issue of Teen Vogue.

While I was working on my homework a little while later, I heard my mom call from the basement. I tried to understand her, but I couldn't make out what she was saying. I would've gone down and talked to her, but I was in the middle of a math problem. "One minute!" I yelled. If it was important she would've come up and told me.

I was working hard when I heard her yell louder.

"ONE MINUTE!" I yelled again.

She probably wanted me to do the dishes or something. Booooring!

Anyway, she always told me that school comes first.

When I finally finished my homework, I went downstairs to see what she needed. But I stopped on the last step.

My jaw dropped.

I couldn't believe it!

My mother was laying flat on the floor.

"MOM!" I yelled and ran over to her.

  She wasn't breathing.

I burst into tears as I ran to find my phone to call 9-1-1.
