Zack and I got in the car immediately."Are you okay?" He asked me quietly.
I wiped away a few tears and looked at him.
His crystal blue eyes were looking at me with compassion.
"I think so", I said, still staring at his eyes.
He smiled.
I smiled.
Time stopped.
He took my hand and told me just the thing I wanted to hear.
"Everything is going to be alright".
I normally think that phrase is just an expression, but this time, I knew he meant it, and I believed him.
Zack kissed me on the cheek and started the car.
I blushed and felt happiness overlap the sadness and worry that filled my body.
The car started moving and Zack turned on the radio.
The song "God Bless the Broken Road" turned on.
I hummed it a little, but sang it when the chorus turned on.
"Every long lost dream led me to where you are. Others who broke my heart, they were like northern stars. Pointing me on my way into your loving arms"
Zack smiled and sang with me.
"This much I know is true. That God blessed the broken road that led me straight to you"
He was AMAZING!!
"Zack!?!" I squealed.
"What?" He asked me, as if he didn't know.
"You have a gift!"
"What? Me? No." He said modestly.
"Are you kidding? You sang that better than the Rascal Flats did!" I said, crossing my arms.
"So did you!" He replied.
I laughed. "Thanks but I know I'm terrible. Singing isn't really my strong suit. But you!!!! You were amazing!!"
"You're just being nice!" He said admiringly.
We continued arguing over his voice, until we pulled up to the hospital.
"You ready?" He asked me.
I nodded and we walked in.
"Can I help you?" The lady at the front desk asked, barely looking up at us.
"Um.. Yes", Zack said. "We're here for Ms. Summers".
The woman looked up something on her computer, then called in a Doctor.
"Please take a seat", she said, pointing to a chair.
We sat down and waited.
I stared at the floor for a while, when I heard footsteps approaching us.
"Melody?" a voice said.
I wiped away a few tears and looked up to see a tall Doctor looking down at me.
I stood up and said "That's me".
"Please follow me", he insisted.
We walked the long path to the hospital rooms, each step scaring me more.
When we finally approached my mother's room, he put a hand on my shoulder and opened the door.
I took a step inside and peeked in.
My jaw dropped and my eyes filled up with tears.
"Mom?" I said softly.
"Mel!" Her sweet voice said back.
