Dad: Mel, can I have a hug? I have to take your sister to her sleepover. I'll be back in a little bit.
Mel: (Crossing her arms) No!
Dad: why not?
Mel: I want to go to the sleepover! Why can't I go too?
Dad: you're not old enough yet. Next year you can.
Mel: But I don't want to wait a whole year! I want to go now!
Dad: How about we make a deal? I take Kate to her sleepover, then when I come back, we can go out for ice cream!
Mel: can we go to Sal's Sprinkles?
Dad: we can go anywhere you want!
Mel: yay!! Have fun at your dumb sleepover,Kate! We're going out for ICE CREAM!
Dad: Mel!
Mom: you don't say dumb!
Dad: apologize to your sister right now!
Mel: I'm sorry, Kate.
Kate: it's ok. I'll probably have more fun than you anyway! (Mel sticks her tongue out)
Dad: (Looks at his watch) Ok, we gotta go! Bye girls! We'll be right back!
Mel: Bye, daddy! (Blows him a kiss)
(Dad closes the door)
An hour later
Mom: what's taking them so long? Kate's friend only lives like 10 minutes away.
Mel: I don't know! But he should hurry up! I'm hungry!
(Telephone rings)
Mel: I GOT IT!!! (Runs and picks up the phone) Hello? (Short pause) Mommy it's for you.
Mom: (takes the phone) Hello? (Long pause) No! No! No! (Bursts into tears and hangs up) NOO!!
Mel: (scared) Mommy, what's wrong? (Starts crying too) Mommy?
Mom: Honey, your father and Kate won't be coming home.
Mel: when?
Mom: (long pause) ever.
