"Miss Summers......your mother is in a coma."
I felt like I couldn't breathe.
"A.... coma?" I asked quietly.
"Yes. I am very sorry." He told me. He looked like he was about to cry, too.
Hazel put her hand on my shoulder.
"Mel-"
"Can I see her?" I asked, cutting Hazel off.
"Are you sure?" The doctor asked, hesitantly.
"Positive", I replied.
"Then follow me", he told me.
We got up, but the doctor stopped Hazel.
"Sorry, only family", he said.
"But-"
"It's ok", Hazel said. She sat back down.
I gave her a hug, and turned around.
Then I followed the doctor through the hallways into my mom's hospital room.
When we got there, I immediately started to cry. She looked so lifeless.
"I'll give you two some alone time", the doctor said, closing the door.
"Mom, I love you..." My voice trailed off.
"...and I'm sorry for not being a good daughter. When you were yelling, I should of come helped you. But instead, I was doing my homework. I put school before family and I'm sorry, mom. I'm really sorry..."I cried harder.
"...Thank you for being the one person in my life who understands me. The one person who will stand by my side forever. You... Are my hero..."
"... I hope that one day I will be as good of a mother... and as good of a person as you are..."
"....I love you..."
Right as I said that, an old lady walked in and gave me a hug.
"Grandma!"
She was crying.
"You came all the way in from Florida? But she just got hurt three hours ago. And it's a long flight... How did you find out?"
"Well I was flying in for a surprise visit, but when I came to your house, no one was there. So I asked your neighbor who was just outside, and he said that she was taken to the hospital!"
"I know, crazy!" I said.
She took a deep breath. "A coma..."
She began to cry too.
I gave her a hug.
After a few minutes of crying and hugging, we stopped and wiped away our tears.
"How about we take our minds off of this for a little bit, and go get some ice cream?" She asked me.
"And just leave mom here?"
