911: 911, what's your emergency?
Mel: my mom is laying flat on the kitchen floor. She was yelling something a little bit ago then just stopped. Next thing I knew, she was down.
911: Just calm down sweetie. Is she breathing?
Mel: No. (Sobbing)
911: What is your address?
Mel: 314 Cedarbrook Drive, Maplewood, Illinois.
911: Do you know CPR?
Mel: yes but-
911: do it.
Mel: ...Ok.
(Mel puts down the phone and tries CPR)
1,2,3,4...
Mel: I don't think it's working!
911: Don't be afraid to push too hard.
Mel: But I don't want to break her rib!
911: It would be better to have a broken rib and stay alive, than to have no broken rib and die.
At the sound of die, I pushed down harder.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15....
Then the paramedics came in and I hung up the phone.
They saw my mom and rushed right in with big equipment and tools, while I was still doing CPR. They thanked me for the CPR, and said I did the right thing.
Then another paramedic came in with a defibrillator. They cut her shirt off, and put the pads on her stomach.
"1...2...3..." I couldn't watch. It just made me cry harder.
Someone else ran inside.
I couldn't see who it was because my tears blurred my eyes.
The person ran over and hugged me.
"Mel! Are you ok?" It was Hazel.
"Hazel!" I hugged harder.
"I saw the ambulance and the fire trucks and got really worried." She told me.
I kept crying.
"What happened?"
"I don't know. My mom-she-she-I don't know!"
"Hey, she's going to be ok!" She said cheerfully to me.
They put my mom on a gurney and took her outside into the ambulance. I went in with her.
"I'll meet you at the hospital, alright?" Hazel asked me.
"Ok", I told her and gave her another hug.
Then we left.
When we arrived at the hospital, they took my mom into the emergency room and told me to wait in the waiting room.
As I sat there, I couldn't help but think that this was all my fault. When I heard my mom yelling something, I should've gone and checked on her. Instead, I just sat up in my room, finishing my homework. What kind of daughter am I?
It was boring sitting in the waiting room, seeing all of the other people who felt the same as I did. So I went on my phone.
When I turned it on, I saw that I had an Instagram notification.
Z-man47 has requested to follow you.
Z-man47? What kind of a name is that? I thought to myself. I chuckled.
As usual, I stalked his account to see if I knew him or if he was hot.
Turns out I did know him.
IT WAS ZACK!!! ZACK EVERTON WANTS TO FOLLOW ME!!!!
I immediately clicked the check button which lets him follow me. Then Hazel walked in.
"Hazel!" I exclaimed.
"Sorry, I couldn't come sooner. My car wouldn't start so I had to take my dad's."
"Oh-no!"
"It's ok, it's really old anyway. It was bound to stop working soon."
"Well, guess who just requested me on Instagram!" I said.
"Ariana Grande? No... Taylor Lautner? No... Obama!"
I laughed. "No! Look!"
I showed her Zack's account on my phone.
"Zack- My cousin?"
"Your cousin?"
"Yeah, Zack. He's actually kind of like a brother to me. When his family was really poor and couldn't afford a house, he lived with us in Maine. Then, when we moved to Illinois, they came with but bought their own house. You're excited that he followed you?" She asked me.
"Uhh.. YEAH! He's like the hottest guy at Ridgeton."
"Eww!" She shouted. "Not Zack!"
I laughed a little too hard.
We kept talking about him for an hour. Then a doctor came in.
"Are you Melody Summers?" he asked me.
"Yes", I answered.
"I have some bad news for you."
