Seven years later
I woke up and opened my eyes to see the plain white walls of the hospital room.
I was still really drowsy and desperately needed food.
"Already awake?" A voice next to me said.
I jumped slightly, startled.
It was Zack.
"Oh, hi sweetheart. How's it going?"
"Me?" He asked, "how are you? You're the one that just came out of surgery!"
"I'm okay." I said, "Just really hungry."
He smiled with his cute smile.
"You're in luck! I just stopped at Jimmy John's and bought you a sandwich."
"Yes!" I yelled, ripping the sandwich out of his hands like a madwoman.
"I really do have the best husband ever!" I said, smiling at him.
"And I have the best wife ever!" He replied.
"Not you! I was talking to my sandwich!"
He laughed as a nurse came in.
She wore blue scrubs and a smile on her face.
"Good news!" She said, "The operation went smoothly and you only have one more test before you are allowed to head home!"
I smiled at Zack.
"So when will it be?" He asked the nurse.
"Well, Mel will have to stay in recovery for a day or two, and the test will be on Wednesday... So probably Thursday!"
"Thursday! That's great" I exclaimed.
Just then, Zack's phone rang.
"It's the babysitter," he said, looking at the caller ID.
"Hello?"
Zack's face went from confused to concerned to confused to concerned again.
"Honey? What is it?" I asked, but Zack didn't answer.
"Oh no!" He shrieked. "I'm on my way!"
Then he hung up.
"Zack?"
"Ally had an asthma attack and passed out. She has an ambulance coming immediately!"
Ally is our 3-year-old daughter who was diagnosed with asthma last year. She has really violent attacks and has almost died from lack of air. It's very scary!
"I'm so sorry, Mel, but I have to go!" He said, kissing me on the cheek.
"Hold on! I'm coming, too!" I yelled as I jumped out of the bed.
The nurse put her arm in front of me.
"No you're not! The doctor has ordered you to stay in bed! Now get back in and get some rest!" She yelled.
"But you don't understand! This is my daughter!" I yelled.
"I do understand!" She spit back, "But Doctor Ray ordered you to stay in bed and get some rest! I'm just the nurse. I can't do anything about it!"
