"So how far do you think they got?" Miller questioned, trailing a few paces behind Brigid. She didn't bother to look over her shoulder as they kept walking alongside the river. Miller rolled his eyes when his answer got ignored and was tired of the suffocating silence. So he needed to provoke her to talk, "Wanna tell me why you care about Jasper so much any way?"

That made her turn around.

She kept walking backwards along the path but was paying no attention to the ground behind her. Her gaze softening, which gained a weak smile from Nate before he jogged over to her. "You know why, Nate. It's all my fault that my mother and Cody are dead. And I can't lose anyone else that I care about."

He grabbed her arm, making her turn around and look at him. Her eyes were watery and she shook her head, wiping a fallen tear from under her eye. His head tilted to the side, "You have to know that it wasn't your fault."

She sniffed loudly before turning around without another word. She crossed her arms across her chest, and raised her head to the sky, trying to stop the tears that were rimming her eyes. Nate called after her, "Callie!"

"It was my fault!" Her cry hitched in her throat, and her voice breaking in the middle of the sentence. She kept walking but she tripped over something, tumbling to the ground and her knee banging against a piece of metal. She cursed out under her breath, "Oh fuck."

Within a matter of seconds, Miller was kneeling down beside her and placing a hand on her knee. He stared at her with wide eyes, but she desperately refused to make eye contact with him. "Are you okay?"

"Just peachy," The redhead groaned out. Brigid pulled her knee towards her chest and let the warm tears finally fall down her cheeks. He pulled his backpack off of his shoulders and sorted through the bag until he found a belt from the Dropship. He leaned forward, taking the belt and wrapping it around her knee. He stood up, lending out his hand for her, before hoisting her onto both of her feet. She gently leaned down on her foot, letting pressure settle but she cursed out in pain.

She went to continue walking but she noticed Miller crouched down, inspecting what she tripped over. She squinted her eyes at what seemed to be a door handle, "What is it?"

Miller brushed his fingers over the dirt, cleaning off a door handle. He yanked on the handle, the soil that was packed over it shifting slightly. He pulled again, harder this time and the door cracked open, revealing a small bunker. Her eyes widened, as Miller peaked his head inside. He let out a laugh, "No way."

She grinned down at him before looking back up and noticing something off in the distance. She squinted her eyes as she watched a yellow mist coming straight for them. "Hey, Miller. What the hell is that?"

Miller shrugged his shoulders, making his way over towards it, "No idea." He held out his hand towards the fog, but it burnt his skin immediately and he let out a groan. He pulled away, staring down at the small bubbles already forming on his skin, "It burnt me."

He turned around to look at Brigid in a panic. "Callie, get in the bunker. Now!" The acid fog burnt his hand again and he started to run towards Brigid. She quickly climbed down into the small compartment before Miller jumped down, landing with a hard thud and quickly pulling the latch down. Miller winced in pain as he cradled his injured hand.

She walked over to him, "Let me see it."

Nate released his clenched fist, revealing the burn to his best friend. There were dozens of white bubbles and his skin was a bright red color. He hissed out as she inspected it. She bit her bottom lip, "You know, I'm thinking this isn't something I could just kiss and make better like we used to do when we were five."
