They left the Core in silence.

The winding stair of silver light faded behind them, vanishing as if it had never existed. The forest above had changed. Trees twisted subtly, their leaves shimmered with iridescent hues, and the air held a different charge—like the world itself had shifted in their absence.

Naida walked ahead, her gaze hard. Joren trailed behind, expression unreadable. Noah stayed close to Sophia, watching her more than the path ahead.

Sophia said nothing.

The memory of Dorian's betrayal clung to her like smoke. He had been with them since the beginning. He had fought beside her. Shared firelight, near-death, and laughter. Now he was gone—consumed by the Core—or something else entirely.

And worse, he'd known something. Something Elyra had buried.

They made camp in a glade surrounded by whispering pines. The night was unnaturally still.

Naida broke the silence first. "We were fools to trust him."

"He was one of us," Sophia said. "Until the end."

Joren grunted. "He was never one of me. Quiet men are always hiding knives."

Noah stirred the fire. "He wasn't lying about the Core. I saw it too. Kaelvar... he wasn't born a monster."

Naida rounded on him. "You sympathize with him now?"

"No," Noah replied quietly. "But if we don't understand how he fell, we'll never stop what's coming."

The group lapsed into silence again, each lost in thought.

Sophia lay down but couldn't sleep. As the fire crackled, her eyes drifted shut—and the visions returned.

She was standing in a vast marble hall, bathed in sunlight that came from no discernible source. Elyra stood at the center, younger and more radiant than Sophia had ever imagined. Beside her was Kaelvar—tall, dark-haired, his eyes filled with fire and sorrow.

"This will tear us apart," he said. "You can't do this."

"If I don't, your power will destroy everything," Elyra answered.

"I would give it up. For you. You know I would."

Sophia's breath caught. She wasn't watching a memory—she was inside it.

Elyra stepped forward and touched Kaelvar's chest.

"I know. That's why I can't let you."

Light erupted from her fingers, and Kaelvar screamed.

Sophia awoke with a gasp.

Morning dawned gray.

Noah sat beside her, sharpening his blade. "You called her name in your sleep."

"Whose?"

"Elyra. Then his—Kaelvar's."

Sophia sat up, her head throbbing. "I saw more. She didn't seal him out of hatred. She sealed him out of love."

Noah frowned. "That's not what the Elders say."

"They don't know. Or they chose to forget."

He looked at her, eyes dark with concern. "And what does that make you, Sophia? Her daughter, or her unfinished plan?"

She didn't answer.

Because she wasn't sure anymore.
