The sky above the Kingdom of Wind was a kaleidoscope of motion.

Clouds curled like brushstrokes, drifting in lazy spirals across the cerulean expanse. Floating isles bobbed on invisible currents, tethered by golden bridges that shimmered with light. Windchimes sang in unfamiliar tones, and stairways built from gusts alone beckoned the brave skyward.

Sophia stepped off the airship's ramp with her hood drawn low. The trip from Terravahl had taken two days, and her time in the Obsidian Labyrinth still lingered in her bones like a second skin. The ground beneath her feet was deceptively solid—though she knew it was wind magic, woven dense enough to hold weight.

The city of Aeria was beautiful. And false.

Noah walked at her side, his hand never far from the hilt of his blade. He didn't trust this place. Neither did she.

Too much beauty.

Too little truth.

The Wind King's palace hung suspended in the sky, supported by massive wings of woven air and starlight. Its spires glinted like blades, and each doorway seemed to vanish as you approached—only to reappear behind you. It was a place meant to confuse.

To dazzle.

To control.

A page greeted them near the palace gates—a young girl with feathers braided into her hair.

"The Wind King bids you welcome, Guardian Sophia," she said, her tone carefully measured. "He hopes your stay will be... enlightening."

Sophia exchanged a look with Noah.

"Tell him I look forward to it," she replied.

The girl bowed, and the wind lifted her away.

Inside, the palace felt alive.

Walls shifted as they walked, never quite in the same place twice. Stairs led nowhere, then somewhere, then nowhere again. Noah gritted his teeth after the fourth time they ended up in a hallway they'd already passed.

"This place is a maze."

Sophia pressed her palm to the nearest wall. The wind that pulsed behind it whispered in voices too faint to understand.

"Not a maze," she murmured. "A test."

At last, they reached the throne room.

The Wind King stood waiting—young, golden-eyed, and smiling. Long white hair curled around his shoulders like storm clouds, and his robes shimmered with symbols of gust and gale.

Behind him stood a familiar face.

Kaen.

His smirk was unchanged. So were his ocean-gray eyes—calm, charming, cold.

"You've changed," he said, voice like honey on glass. "Shadow suits you."

Sophia didn't blink. "So does treachery. How's that working out for you?"

Kaen chuckled. "Still sharp. Good. You'll need that here."

The Wind King lifted a hand, silencing the room.

"Sophia of the Six," he said. "You are welcome in Aeria, but the wind remembers everything. We offer guidance, not allegiance. Our skies are free."

"Freedom without loyalty is just a prettier word for chaos," Noah muttered under his breath.
