The journey to the Earth Kingdom began with silence.

Noah, riding beside her on a stone-winged drake, hadn't spoken since they left the Wind Kingdom. The air between them was strained—not cold, but charged. The kind of silence that waited for someone to be brave enough to break it.

Sophia wasn't ready.

Below them, the terrain shifted from soaring cliffs and floating isles to a tapestry of towering forests, endless valleys, and jagged mountains that looked like the spine of the world. The Earth Kingdom stretched wide and deep, ancient and unmoving, its roots running far beneath the surface of Elarion.

When they landed, a procession waited.

Riders astride creatures made of moss and rock. Armor of clay and gold. Eyes sharp, like flint.

At their center stood a woman.

She had skin the color of rich soil, vines woven into her hair, and a staff crowned with crystal and bone. Her presence exuded weight—like time itself had grown weary and found rest within her bones.

"Welcome to Terravahl," she said, voice low and resonant. "I am Maelin, Warden of the Stone. Your arrival was foretold by the trees."

Sophia bowed. "Then I hope the trees were kind."

Maelin's lips curved. "The trees never lie, child. But they rarely comfort."

The city of Terravahl was unlike anything Sophia had seen.

It wasn't built upon the land—it was within it.

Streets curved around living roots. Buildings were carved into mountainsides and hollowed trunks. Lanterns floated on windless air, glowing with soft amber light. Even the sky seemed distant here, as if the kingdom looked inward, not up.

They were taken to a great hall, where statues of past Guardians lined the walls.

Sophia saw her mother's likeness—taller, sterner than she remembered.

Beneath the statue's feet, a plaque read: "Elyra, Guardian of Balance. Breaker of the Deep Pact."

She frowned. "What's the Deep Pact?"

Maelin's eyes narrowed slightly.

"An oath forged before your time. One not spoken of lightly."

Sophia pressed. "Why?"

Maelin's smile faded. "Because it was broken."

That night, Sophia wandered the stone paths of the city, unable to sleep. Her mind replayed the phrase again and again: Breaker of the Deep Pact.

She didn't hear the footsteps until it was too late.

"Sneaking off again, Lancaster?"

Kaen stepped from the shadows.

She froze.

His smirk was easy, charming.

But his eyes—sharp, calculating.

"You followed me."

"Curiosity's a curse," he said, stepping closer. "And you're a riddle no one's solved."

Sophia crossed her arms. "What do you want, Kaen?"

He tilted his head. "To help you. Isn't that what friends do?"

Something in his tone itched under her skin. "Are we friends?"

He didn't answer.

Instead, he leaned in and whispered, "Be careful what stones you unearth in Terravahl, Sophia. Some truths were buried for a reason."
