The journey back from the Black Summit was shrouded in a haunted silence.
Kaen, too weak to stand unaided, leaned against Noah as they crossed the threshold into the Fire Kingdom. The air here was warm, scented with soot and glowing embers—normally a comfort, now an oppressive reminder of what had been lost. Sophia trailed behind them, her mind in turmoil.
The revelation gnawed at her: Elyra, her mother, had broken sacred laws to create her. And Kaelvar... had told the truth?
They arrived at the Emberhall, where Elira had summoned the Council of Elders. The chamber was somber, a half-circle of elemental leaders seated on stone thrones, their expressions grave as they awaited Sophia's report.
Elira stood tall beside her, hand resting lightly on Sophia's shoulder. "Speak the truth, no matter how heavy it feels."
Sophia swallowed and began.
She recounted Kaelvar's words, Kaen's imprisonment, and the dark truth about her lineage. When she finished, the silence that followed was thunderous.
Then Councilor Vaelor of the Earth Kingdom rose, beard bristling with agitation. "If this is true, the Guardian is not a chosen one. She is an abomination—born of forbidden blood."
"Enough!" Elira snapped, her voice laced with flame. "She has done more for Elarion than any of us in centuries. Would you cast her aside now, after all she's sacrificed?"
Councilor Sylenne of the Water Kingdom spoke next, calmer but no less shaken. "What if her power truly is unstable? The Core may not be enough to hold Kaelvar sealed. If her origins are a disruption... then perhaps Kaelvar's prophecy is right."
Noah stepped forward. "You would rather fear her than trust her? She's risked everything—bled, suffered, fought for this realm."
"But if the very world rejects her—" Vaelor began.
"I never asked to be made this way!" Sophia shouted.
The words exploded from her like a storm. Her eyes burned silver-blue, and the air crackled. "I didn't choose this. Elyra did. And she's gone. But I'm still here—fighting your war, carrying your burdens. So if you want me gone, say it. Say it to my face."
No one spoke.
Elira placed a hand over Sophia's. "You are not alone in this."
Kaen, from his seat at the side, his voice hoarse: "He's still growing stronger. And he knows you're unraveling."
Sophia nodded slowly. "Then I need to find the rest of the truth. Everything Elyra kept from me. If I'm to defeat Kaelvar... I need to understand why I was really created."

That night, sleep refused to come.
Sophia sat in the Emberhall's central sanctum, alone beneath the massive, flickering brazier. Shadows danced along the curved stone walls, and the scent of burnt cedar clung to her clothes. She cradled the locket her mother had left her—the only thing she'd carried from the human world. She'd opened it countless times... but never noticed the fine etching hidden along its rim.
Runes. Elemental. Ancient.
Her heart pounded. Carefully, she traced the markings with her fingertip, whispering the elemental incantation Elira had taught her. The locket pulsed once in her palm and then... clicked.
It opened, not just to reveal the faded picture of her mother, but a hidden compartment beneath the image. Inside lay a tiny shard of crystal—glowing faintly, infused with every color of the elemental spectrum.
