The firelight danced across Noah's knuckles as he punched the training post again—and again.
Each strike sent ripples through the air, heat radiating outward in sharp bursts. His fists bled, but he didn't stop.
Sophia stood in the doorway, silent.
She had never seen him like this. Controlled rage, yes. But this—this was something deeper. A fracture beneath the flame.
"Noah," she said softly.
He didn't respond. The next punch ignited the post, engulfing it in blue-white fire.
The scent of scorched wood filled the air.
"I trusted him," Noah muttered. "We all did."
⸻
Sophia stepped closer. "Kaen fooled everyone."
"He didn't fool me." Noah's voice was a low growl. "I just ignored what I saw."
He sat heavily on the bench, breath ragged. Sweat clung to his skin, but the fire in his eyes burned hotter than any training room could contain.
Sophia sat beside him.
"I get it," she said. "He used me too. But we can't let him win by tearing ourselves apart."
Noah turned toward her. "That's not what this is about."
She raised an eyebrow. "Then what?"
⸻
He was quiet for a long time.
Finally, he reached into the collar of his shirt and pulled out a charred medallion—small, circular, marked with the sigil of flame.
"The Crest of Pyros," Sophia murmured. "I thought only royal bloodlines—"
"I was born in the Ash Quarter of the Fire Kingdom," Noah said. "My parents were servants. The kind who cleaned soot out of noble chimneys and weren't allowed in the inner halls."
Sophia's brows furrowed. "Then how did you...?"
"One day, the palace caught fire. Arson. A rebel cell trying to collapse the regime. My parents died saving nobles who didn't even remember their names."
His hands trembled. "I should've died too. But something woke in me. The fire answered. Not with destruction, but protection. I walked through a collapsing corridor wrapped in flame that didn't burn."
⸻
Sophia listened without interrupting.
"The king adopted me," Noah continued. "Not out of mercy. Out of fear. He thought I was a sign. A weapon. The 'Burning Heir.' So he trained me like one."
His voice turned bitter. "I killed for him before I even understood what loyalty meant."
Sophia looked down. "You've never said anything."
Noah's laugh was hollow. "I wasn't supposed to. Royal secrets don't breathe once they're buried."
He turned to her, eyes glowing faintly gold. "Kaen reminded me of what I used to be. Charming. Deadly. Loyal to the wrong people."
⸻
Sophia placed a hand on his.
"You're not that person anymore."
He held her gaze. "Aren't I?"
The question lingered, unanswered.
⸻
Outside the training chamber, clouds swirled unnaturally. The wind hissed like a warning.
Sophia rose. "Whatever Kaen is planning, he won't stop. Not now. And we can't either."
