Sophia awoke with a start.

The spire chamber was silent, but her skin prickled with unseen static. That dream—the spiraling tower, the seventh sigil, the whispered name—lingered behind her eyes like an afterimage from staring into the sun.

She pressed her hand to the floor, grounding herself. Fire flickered beneath her palm, followed by a swirl of water, a gust of wind, the steady thrum of earth. All six elements responded—but something else stirred beneath them.

A hum without color.

An element with no name.

She shivered and stood.

Down the corridor, Elira waited, dressed in formal robes, her expression unreadable. "You felt it too," she said without preamble.

Sophia nodded. "It came in a vision. My mother... and something else. Something older."

Elira's eyes darkened like storm clouds. "I feared this day would come."

She guided Sophia to the Keeper's Archive beneath the Heartspire—a subterranean library carved into the living roots of the Tree of Fire, with scrolls etched in flame and stone tablets that whispered secrets if you touched them too long.

At the archive's heart stood a sealed vault with no visible door. Elira placed her hand against a knot of gnarled roots, and ancient runes glowed to life. The vault opened with a groan of earth and ash.

Inside was a single artifact.

A black crystal shard, humming softly with power that bent light around it.

Sophia stepped forward. "What is it?"

"The Aether Shard," Elira whispered. "It belonged to Elyra... and to her mother before her. An anchor to the element that was never meant to be touched—Aether. The seventh. The Void between creation and destruction."

Sophia stared at it, the hum vibrating in her bones.

"This... was in my dream."

"Because your blood remembers," Elira said. "And so does Elarion."

Sophia reached out, fingers hovering just above the surface of the Aether Shard. Its presence pulled at her—gentle, persuasive, like a forgotten melody trying to be remembered.

"What happens if I touch it?" she asked.

Elira hesitated. "No one knows. Elyra never did. She feared what it would awaken."

Sophia's fingers brushed the shard.

In an instant, the world vanished.

She was standing on a shore of silver sand under a black sky laced with stars that pulsed like heartbeats. The air was neither warm nor cold. It simply was.

Before her stood her mother.

Not in memory. Not in dream.

Elyra.

Whole. Alive. Radiant with quiet power. The same warm, steady gaze Sophia remembered as a child—but older. Sadder.

"You've found it," Elyra said.

"Is this real?" Sophia asked, her voice catching.

Elyra nodded slowly. "Real enough."

Tears welled in Sophia's eyes. "I miss you."

"I've missed you every second since I let you go," Elyra said. "But now is not the time for sorrow. There's something you must understand."

A ripple passed through the sky. The stars blinked out for an instant, then returned—dimmer.
