The path to the Kingdom of Darkness was not marked on any map. Umbraal, shrouded in myth and whispered fear, loomed far beneath the surface of Elarion—buried in a hollowed chasm where even light dared not linger. The descent had taken days, winding through narrow caves, forgotten ruins, and tunnels that breathed with an unnatural chill. Now, with every step deeper into the realm, Sophia could feel something shift within her—an old, unnamed part of herself awakening.
The air grew heavy. Not just with moisture, but with memory. Whispers echoed off the obsidian walls, faint as dust but persistent, like long-forgotten voices begging to be heard. Sophia stopped beside a jagged pillar of black crystal, brushing her fingers along its surface. The stone pulsed faintly under her touch.
Noah stepped beside her, his golden eyes dimmer than usual. "We're close. Can you feel it?"
She nodded. "It's like... something is watching. Not from around us, but from inside me."
Noah didn't respond immediately. He scanned the corridor ahead, where the shadows grew denser, curling like living things. "Darkness isn't just absence here. It has will. Be careful what you show it."
Sophia swallowed. "And if it sees too much?"
"It'll offer you more than you're ready to take." He said it softly, as if speaking from experience.
They pressed on. Behind them, Elira and the remaining elemental companions followed in silence—each subdued, each sensing the weight of what lay ahead. The betrayal by Kaen had shaken them all, but especially Sophia. Trust had become a fragile thing, and Umbraal, with its twisted reflections and secrets, was no place to carry fragile things.
The passage finally opened into a vast cavern lit by the strange glow of blackfire lanterns. The flames gave no warmth, only dim light, casting elongated shadows that slithered like phantoms. At the center of the cavern rose a fortress of stone and bone, spires twisted into spiral thorns. This was the Sanctum of Echoes—the seat of the Night Tribunal, the ruling council of Umbraal.
Sophia's breath caught as they approached the gate. Two sentinels stood guard, cloaked in veils of smoke. Their eyes gleamed with violet light, and though they did not speak, the gates creaked open at their presence.
Inside, the air was colder still. A stairway descended in a wide spiral, every step etched with runes that shimmered faintly as Sophia's foot touched them. The walls murmured in a language only half understood—fragments of fear, love, betrayal, and loss. The voices were hers, but older. Versions of herself from dreams, from regrets, from choices never made.
Noah steadied her when she stumbled. "The Sanctum reads you. It feeds on memory. Stay grounded."
She gripped his hand, grateful. "I don't know who I am here."
He looked at her, his gaze firm. "You're Sophia. That hasn't changed. The darkness just wants you to forget."
They reached the chamber below—a circular hall draped in heavy black velvet, with braziers flickering with dark flame. At the far end sat three figures, cloaked in layers of shadow that shifted like smoke. They were the Tribunal: the Watcher, the Whisperer, and the Weaver.
The Watcher raised its hood first. A face, pale and cracked like old porcelain, stared with eyes black as ink. "The One of All walks beneath."
Sophia stepped forward, unsure of the etiquette but unwilling to kneel. "I've come to learn from the Kingdom of Darkness. To face what waits inside me."
The Whisperer laughed, a sound like falling ash. "You carry more shadow than you know, child of Elyra. But you cannot wear it like a cloak. You must bleed it."
