Word of Kaen's betrayal spread like wildfire through Terravahl.
The Council sealed the eastern wing of the palace. The Elders gathered in tight clusters, speaking in low tones. Guards doubled at every gate. No one dared say Kaen's name aloud—but every face carried the weight of the truth.
The trusted Wind wielder was a traitor.
Sophia stood before the Elders that morning, her face bruised but unbowed. The Crown hovered silently above her palm, its six-elemental glow pulsing faintly.
"I want answers," she said. "All of them."
Elder Maelin's lips thinned. "You've endangered yourself by venturing into forbidden ground."
"I saved myself," Sophia shot back. "And uncovered the truth you all kept hidden."
The chamber fell into silence.
Noah stepped forward. "Kaen wasn't working alone. He had knowledge only someone close to the Council could've given him."
Heads turned. Suspicion bloomed like mold in damp corners.
Maelin did not flinch. "Accusations without proof will only divide us further."
Sophia spoke again—calmer, colder.
"Then tell me who I really am."

That night, Noah found her in the courtyard, beneath the stars.
"I knew he was hiding something," he said, staring into the fire bowl between them. "But not this."
Sophia nodded, arms wrapped around herself.
"I trusted him," she murmured. "I told him things I never told anyone."
Noah looked at her. "You still can. With me."
Their eyes met.
For a long time, neither spoke.
Then she said quietly, "He said Kaelvar needed me alive. That I'm the lock."
Noah's jaw tightened. "He's right."
She blinked. "What?"
Noah hesitated. Then: "Your mother wasn't just a Guardian. She was Kaelvar's twin."
⸻
Sophia recoiled like he'd struck her.
"No. That's not possible."
"It's not something many know. Elyra and Kaelvar were born of the same essence—two sides of the same cosmic spark. She chose light. He chose chaos. When she helped seal him, part of her power—her blood—was bound to the prison."
Sophia shook her head.
"You should've told me."
"I wanted to. But I was ordered not to."
She stood, fury rippling through her like a storm. "You say you're on my side. But every time I ask for the truth, I get riddles and secrets."
"I've always been on your side," he said, rising too. "Even when they told me not to be."
The air around them crackled.
"I don't know who to trust anymore," she said.
Noah stepped closer, voice low. "Then start with yourself."
⸻
Meanwhile, far beneath the Fire Kingdom, Kaen lay bound in chains forged from starlight and volcanic iron.
