The forest had changed.

Not visibly—trees still whispered overhead, mist clung to the undergrowth, and birds called softly in the distance. But something in the rhythm was off.

Time itself felt like it was pulsing, as if the world held its breath between seconds.

Sophia walked at the head of their small group, the orb from the Veiled Valley cradled in her hand. It no longer shimmered with gentle light. It pulsed with an amber glow, each throb like the beat of a distant heart.

Kaen's words haunted her: You carry a seventh.

And that whisper—You are not the end of the cycle. You are the beginning.

Time. The seventh element.

What did it mean?

Why her?

Joren limped beside her, his face pale and jaw clenched. His injuries from the ambush were healing slowly—too slowly. Naida walked behind them, her head bowed, guilt like a shroud around her shoulders. She hadn't spoken since the attack.

Noah kept to Sophia's left, always scanning the horizon.

Their silence was not just from exhaustion—it was heavy with tension, secrets, and something else.

Fear.

"Where are we going?" Joren finally asked, his voice rough.

Sophia held up the orb. "It's guiding us. East."

"Toward the Ashen Wastes," Noah muttered. "Nothing but scorched land and dead history."

"Or maybe not so dead," Sophia replied, eyes narrowing. "I think... I think there's something buried there. Something I'm supposed to find."

By nightfall, the trees thinned. The soil darkened, becoming gritty and brittle beneath their boots. The stars overhead flickered with reddish hues, like embers still glowing after a long-forgotten fire.

They camped beneath a stone ridge marked with strange runes—old, nearly erased by time.

Sophia couldn't sleep. Again.

Noah found her sitting near the edge of the firelight, staring at the orb in her hands.

"Do you trust it?" he asked quietly.

"I don't know."

"Then trust yourself."

She looked at him, his face lit faintly by flame. His eyes had softened. After everything—Kaen's betrayal, the awakening of something ancient in her—he hadn't pulled away. He hadn't changed.

But she had.

"I'm scared," she admitted.

He nodded once. "Good. It means you're still human."

Sophia gave a brittle laugh. "Some days I'm not so sure."

Then the orb pulsed—hard.

The ground trembled.

And a single word echoed from the trees around them:

"Elyra."

Sophia jumped to her feet, eyes wide. "That was—"

"I heard it too," Noah said, drawing his blade.

From the shadows, a wind stirred.

Then a figure stepped into the firelight.
