"one year today, huh?" michael said over the phone.

"yeah.. i don't understand why he did it." winnie sulked.

"maybe he wasn't happy? or well, he was. with you, definitely. but maybe his home didn't feel like.. home anymore." michael shrugged, sniffling a tear away.

"please don't cry mike, you'll make me cry." winnie laughed sadly, wiping her eyes with the tissue she had been scrunching in her hand for the past five minutes.

"i can always try." michael said, smiling at winnie over the phone. he had a friend, and she had a friend too.

"yeah, you can," winnie said with a pained smile.

"well, i'm gonna go, okay, win? stay strong. it'll be okay." michael said, reassuring himself more than reassuring winifred.

"bye, mike."

winifred hugged her knees tightly, feeling tears drip from her eyes and hit her legs, sliding down slowly.

she didn't like this. she didn't want to cry over calum. she knew he wouldn't want that.

so she decided to visit him. she walked, shoving her hands in her pockets and her headphones in her ears.

memories flashed in her brain.

"h-hello. i'm cal-calum."

"hello calum. how are you today?"

"hey, calum. how ya feeling?"

"great, now."

"may i please have a hot chocolate with extra marshmellows?"

"you. you're the one who saved my life."

"i love you, more than the galaxy has stars and more than the sun needs heat. you are everything to me, winifred. and if we are brought into some kind of oblivion, then i can only hope that you'll be aware of my love for you. forever plus one day."

her nails made crescent shapes in her palms as she tried not to cry. all the memories kept swiping past in her brain like a slideshow and her breathing became ragged, her heart began pounding and she couldn't take it.

she started to run to the cemetery, her heart pulsing.

when she rushed past all the tombstones, seeing each of the people who were laid to rest, she felt her throat burn. winnie wanted to cry. but she kept it in.

calum's tombstone came into view and she walked to it, every ounce of courage disappearing as she brought herself closer.

she sat down in front of it, finding a loss for words.
