Chapter 28

~Jamie~

After Becca got out of the car; I didn’t do much to stop her. It’s true I feel bad about what I said. But how could she keep something from me like this? Makes me wonder if she has kept anything else from me. Do I feel bad about our breakup? Yes. Driving home is peaceful. I roll the window down of my truck, and turn on Klove.  As I pour my heart out in worship music, an unsettling feeling rests on my soul. The kind of feeling that weighs down on it until you do something about it.

I try to shake it off, but it stays there. I start to do everything I can to get rid of the feeling. I pray, worship but when I start to pray in tongues; God starts to speak.

“Jamie. She needs you. She is in danger. Pray Jamie. She cried out to me. Called out to me.  He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.’

I quickly pull over and begin to pray for Becca’s safety. “Father, wherever she is; protect my love. God keep her safe. Nothing shall come against you. I pray that you wrap your arms around her. In the name of Jesus.”

When the feeling doesn’t subside, I pull my car around and drive to her house.

When I get to the Lawson’s I am not prepared at all.  Flames a several miles high are blazing all over the house.  Fire trucks are everywhere, neighbors standing and gazing; in awe at the fire. I run up to a man dressed in uniform. His brown hair is slicked back and his face is creased with wrinkles, some from worriment.

Pair of burly arms grab me. “Sorry kid, you can’t get past.” The man on my right says. His blonde hair sticks up in all directions and he has smut on his white shirt…

“No you don’t understand. My girlfriend is in there. I know she is.” I say with tears threatening to spill. “You have to let me in there!” I scream and with God’s strength, I push the man inside and run for the flames. “Becca!” I scream. “Kid don’t go in there!” A voice screams at me, but I ignore it. Their feet aren’t far behind, but I push further into the house.

The fire licks my arms and legs as I run through the house looking for Becca. Debris everywhere. Fallen

“Oh God.” I cry out as I make my way through what is left of this house, flames everywhere I turn. “Becca! Baby where are you?” I cry. I trip over something and land on my face, inches from the flames.  A body.

“God, don’t let it be Becca.” I whisper, as I roll the body to face me.

The face, or what is left of it; shocks me. Daniel. His mouth and eyes burnt to a crisp and his eyebrows completely singed off.  “Dear Jesus.” I whimper out.

I lift my fingers to his neck, no pulse.

I don’t have time to pay sympathy to a man who kidnapped my Becca. I walk into the living room and there she is. Tied to a chair, well what is left of a chair; completely unconscious. “Becca!” I cough out, the smoke clouding my lungs. I run to her and undo the singed rope. I pull her in my arms. “Becca, baby. Hold on I am going to get us out of here. I promise you.” I kiss her forehead and walk back to the front door. Before I can exit, part of the stairs falls in front of it, blocking my escape.

“God! Where are you!?” I cry out to him.

“Jamie?” Becca whispers. I hold her closer. Gluing my body to hers. “Hold on baby, I am going to get us out of here. Don’t worry.” I tell her, but on the inside I am batting with fear.

It’s like this darkness that encloses around you; blocking out every surrounding. Every sound. Fear begins to take over. Clouding my mind, more than me smoke is consuming my lungs.

The darkness closes in faster and harder. It closes in until all I can see is darkness. I am consumed by darkness. All I see is black. My eyes are open and all there is; is black.

“Jamie, I haven’t given you a spirit of fear.”  A voice commands. Instantly the darkness leaves, and I look down and Becca is in my arms.

“Jamie.” She whispers again. Her face black with soot and her hair is burnt off a little.  I muster up every ounce of strength and take a breath full of the smoky air, and run out of the house, through the flame. Through the fire. When I see light I collapse.

~~~~~~~~~~~
When I wake up I am on a stretcher with an oxygen tube across my face.
A faint beeping noise comes from the right of me. I look over and see Becca. Gauze is wrapped around her head and her arms. Her face is swollen from all the burns.
An oxygen mask sits on her face.  And the faint noise of a heart monitor beeps as well. I sit up and look around. I’m in the ER at the hospital.
Ms. Sue walks up to me with a solemn smile.  Her Silver hair is pulled up into a pony tail and she has her I love Jesus scrubs on.
“Hey, Sue.” I say with a raspy voice. My throat hurts. Must be from all the smoke.
“Hey buddy. You are quite a hero today, you know that?” She runs her fingers through my hair and looks over at Becca.
“You did a good thing today, Jamie. Saving her. She will have it rough though, she got some bad burns. She had to have skin grafts on her face and some parts of her legs.
But other than that she is fine, for now. She had trouble breathing on her own at first; they had her on the ventilator but she started breathing better a few hours ago.” She sits down in the chair beside me, and hold my fingers.
“Sue, I think I know who did it; the fire.”
She shakes her head. “They got her Jamie. Someone saw her fleeing the scene after the fire was started. Tami Lawson has been taken into custody.” I lean my head back onto to the bed, and breathe a sigh of relief.
“Knock, knock?” Rachel says entering the room. “Hey Mr. Hero. Hungry?” She holds up two containers with soup.
I smile. “Starving.” Ms. Sue stands. “Well you two I better be getting off, I have rounds to do.” She bids her farewell again walks out of the room.
Rachel opens her container and Boston Clam Chowder fills the room.
She pushes a stray hair behind her ear. “So Jamie, we need to talk. Really bad.” I open my own soup and sit up a bit, looking intently in her eyes.
“What about Rachel? Did Becca tell you about her mother being a killer?” She stares into my eyes.
“Jamie they don’t think Becca will come out of her coma.”
