Chapter 1, Part 2

Elsie’s POV

2007

Emma had given me a nice pair of skinny jeans and a flowy top. I put them on, grabbed one of those disposable hairbrushes that I found in a drawer and made my way downstairs once I thought I was presentable enough. Nearly out the door though, I realized I didn’t pay attention to my reflection at all.

I took some steps back to the dresser and looked at myself.

Everything had been enhanced. My hair looked better—fuller and had more of a curl to it; my eyes were more defined, lashes and all, and it seemed that my eyes became a lighter shade of brown. My body looked more toned as well. Though I still looked human…I just looked…better.

I tore myself from my own reflection and finally made my way downstairs. There was Emma on the couch with Samuel on the seat across from her. I’m sure they heard me coming because their attention was already directed at me. I gave them a small smile and sat next to Emma.

“I have to say, Elsie, you’re taking this very well,” Emma spoke up as I sat down. I gave a slight laugh, feeling the burning sensation in my throat again.

“I’m quite surprised at myself as well, if I may be honest,” I told her. I paused and thought about something I’ve wanted to say since I woke up.

“How old are you?” I asked both of them, and they gave me a confused look.

“Well, like I said, I’m 250--“ I cut Samuel off. He didn’t know what I meant.

“No, sorry, I meant how old are you...” I asked again and Emma smiled.

“I think she means how old we look. Or really, what age we’re stuck in,” she laughed at her choice of words. This woman was perfect.

“Ahh,” Samuel chuckled, “I’m 33, and Emma is 29.”

“So…did you marry whilst she was still human?” I asked after processing the information I knew so far.

“Yes, but then I got sick, and I was to die soon. Samuel was obviously not having that.” Emma smiled.

“You never had children, then?” I questioned her.

“No, never did and never will.” She stopped abruptly, as if she realized what she had just said. I can’t have children—a family. “I’m sorry, Elsie. I’m sure you would have wanted a family of your own. But…” she trailed off and looked at Samuel who gave her a nod and a smile.

“But if you’d like, we’d like you to be part of our family of two.” Emma watched my reaction, and all I was thinking was that I was given this twisted…yet wonderful second chance to start over…with a family.

“Yes, I’d like that.” I beamed widely at them.

“Well, that officially makes you a Phillips!” Samuel exclaimed, and we had one of those cheesy group hugs, though I don’t think it gets better than the things I felt in that moment. Long gone was the Hughes part of me....

“You up for hunting, then?” Samuel asked me when we broke apart from each other. I must’ve forgotten about the sting in my throat, but once he asked me I nodded my head furiously, earning a chuckle from him.

“Come with us, Emma, we need womanly support.” He winked, and Emma gave me a pair of hiking boots.

That late afternoon must’ve been the most fun I’d had in years.

A/N: In case you did not realize, that was still the flashback! I promise, the next upload will be present day and officially chapter 2, and the story will finally get somewhere. xx :)
