Chapter 1
I felt the nerves building in my stomach as I jumped out the car and walked round to the boot. With one swift movement I opened the door and grabbed my ski boots and bag. Thanking my dad for the lift I closed the door and started towards the modern building.
Today was my first day at my new summer job. My last summer had been spent training for my dream job, a ski instructor and I had finally got it. For the six weeks of summer I would be teaching at the local indoor ski slope for 3 days a week.
The whole of last week I had been so excited but now the time had come, butterflies were building in the pit of my stomach. I wasn't the most confident person and I was worried that it would be hard to fit in with all the other instructors.
Taking a deep breath, I opened the door and walked into the centre. In a couple of steps I reached the reception, where I introduced myself and was given my pass and directions to the staff room.
Slowly, trying to clam myself down, I made my way to the staff room. Before opening the door I took a second to prepare myself. You'll be fine Jenny I tried to tell myself. I hated that I was so shy.
When I had finally gained enough confidence to open the door I put my hand on the handle but to my surprise it swung open and a tall guy froze in front of me. My eyes widened as I too froze to the spot.
"Hey, sorry didn't mean to almost knock you over there," the boy smiled and he stepped outside the door, letting it close behind him. I just nodded in response, my nerves back in full force. "For lessons you meet your instructor at the bottom of the slope," he continued.
My eyebrows pulled together into a frown, did he really think I was here for a lesson.
"I know, I'm Jenny, the new instructor," I explained, a sudden boost of confidence flowing through me.
"Oh sorry, I just assumed," he said apologetically. "I'm Ben," he continued as he stuck his hand out for me to shake, which I gratefully took. Maybe this wouldn't be as bad as I first though. Ben seemed nice enough, hopefully the rest of the staff would be too.
"Let me introduce to the rest of the instructors," he said as he spun round and began to open the door back into the staff room.
We entered the smallish room. It was quite basic with just a desk, surrounded by chairs, a sofa, fridge, microwave and sink. Off to the left was another smaller room which has pegs for instructor jackets, and shelves for bags and a place for boots too.
All the chairs, except one was taken, three people were also squeezed onto the sofa. It was probably busy as lessons didn't start for another ten minutes.
"Guys this is Jenny, the new instructor," Ben said and various voices responded from around the room, to which I just smiled to. My eyes scanned the room, most of the instructors looked a couple years older than me, except one girl who looked around the same age as me.
"Jenny this is Lexi," he said pointing at the girl who looked the same age as me "Dan, Bel, Jess," he continued as he indicated towards the three squished onto the small sofa, "David and Max," he finished.
"Hi," I said nervously to no one in particular. Lexi was the only one who fully acknowledged my presence, apart from Ben of course, by grinning at me with a small wave from where she sat around the table.
"Over there is the boot room," Ben said as he directed me to the smaller room on the left. "You can leave all your stuff in here," he continued as I followed him into the room. Each shelve was clearly labelled with names. He quickly grabbed a black marker and sticky label and wrote my name before sticking it on the only blank shelf. I pulled my wooly hat out of my bag before quickly shoving it on the shelf.
