Chapter 24
After Ben had explained the whole situation to me we had driven to his parents house to discuss what we should do. Ben and I were completely out of ideas and with every passing second I was more and more anxious. Tomorrow school started again and we needed to think of a plan before then.
We pulled up at the familiar house at around one o'clock. Gripping tightly on to Ben's hand I walked up the path and through the front door. We found Ben's parents in the kitchen preparing lunch which I was grateful for as the pasta Ben was preparing back at his was long since forgotten.
After hugging them both we took our places across from them at the breakfast bar located in the centre of the kitchen. My hand was still tangled with Ben's as we stared at his parents hopefully.
Biting my lip I waited for them to start. Bob talked first. "We have an idea," he said sounding very unsure of himself. Both Ben and I glanced at each other before he nodded for his father to continue. All kinds of different emotions bubbled up in my stomach but the calming feel of Ben's thumb rubbing small circles on my palm soothed me.
"We keep with the story that Jenny is your ex but just explain why the two of you broke up. I know it's not perfect but I think it's the only thing we can do," Bob grimaced as he finished explaining. I thought the idea through and realised he was right. What else could we do? We would just have to tell her the truth, well part of the truth.
"So it's all down to her then?" Ben grimaced as he too took in his fathers plan. Bob nodded in response before a silence fell over the four of us as we thought over the pros and cons.
"Are you ok with this?" Ben asked turning to me. His hand moved to the side of my face as he cupped my cheek. My eyes locked with his and I nodded. I trusted him and if he thought we should try this then I agreed with him. Right now this was our only option and we had to do it fast.
Kissing me on the nose, Ben nodded before turning back to his parents. "Ok, let's call her then." Bob and Jane nodded before putting the casserole dish in the oven and grabbing the house phone.
Moving through to the living room Ben and I sat on the sofa opposite his parents. His arm was slung over the back of the sofa around me and joining to my hand. Jane slowly dialled her nieces number before clicking the speaker button and leaving the phone on the coffee table sitting between the two sofas.
My nerves intensified as the phone began to ring.
Two rings passed.
Then three.
And then a little click sounded signifying she had picked up the phone.
I froze. My heart stopped. My breathing stopped. All I could do was wait for the sound of her voice as she began to talk.
"Hey Auntie!" She chirped happily.
"Hey Callie," Jane smiled as she heard her nieces voice. It seemed that everyone in this family truly did get on well.
"So what's up?" She asked as their was a shuffling of feet in the background. I notice Jane gulp slightly before starting to talk again. No one knew how she was going to react. She could take this well like the rest of Ben's family or she could report us. We had decided to tell her that we were still broken up now but our relationship still happened.
"We have a slight problem," Jane started.
"You know you are starting at the same school Ben's been teaching at," Bob jumped in. His voice was steady, much more calm then Jane's.
"Yes," Callie responded. Clearly she was confused.
"Well I'm just going to say it," Bob sighed. "During the summer Ben dated a girl called Jenny," while Bob took a breath Callie spoke.
"The one at the restaurant? Brown hair, blue eyes? Ben still completely in love with her?" She asked casually. Smirking I turned to Ben who just rolled his eyes at me. My smiled faded once I tuned back into the conversation.
"Yeah that's the one," Bob confirmed. "Well there was a reason they broke up. There had been a bit of a misunderstanding when they started dating." I smiled inwardly at the way Bob explained what had happened. He could have blamed the whole situation on me, but he didn't. "She turned out to be his student," Bob finished.
It felt like we all held our breath as we waited to see how she would react. My hand had a death grip on Ben's and all eyes were on the small mobile device which was sitting on the table.
It felt like we sat their in silence for hours. However, finally she spoke. "Okaaaay," she said drawing out the word. I felt my nerves growing. What did that mean? Ok she won't do anything or ok she will report us? I moved to the edge of my seat waiting for something else. Anything. But she stayed silent.
"We would just really appreciate it if you didn't say anything. It was a misunderstanding and we don't want to damage Ben's career," Bob explained.
"Yeah, don't worry. I won't say anything," Callie said sounding a little less jolly than when she first answered the phone.
"I really appreciate it Callie. It means a lot. I know this is an awkward situation to put you in," Ben joined the conversation before sending a grin in my direction. I remained silent. As far as Callie knew we weren't together anymore, and hopefully it would stay that way.
"No problem Benny, I knew you wouldn't have gone there if you'd known," she said, acting as if it honestly wasn't a big deal at all. However, I knew her words would be different if she realised we were still together.
"Thanks so much Callie. You must come over for dinner soon," Jane said before exchanging their goodbyes and hanging up the phone.
Everyone visibly relaxed when the phone call was over. Hopefully Callie wouldn't change her mind and everything would stay a secret. Maybe Ben and I would get through the rest of the school year.
"So how about some lunch?" Bob said with a laugh. Grinning we stood up and followed Bob and Jane towards the kitchen. When we reached the door Ben stopped me and spun me round to face him.
"I love you so much Goofy," he whispered.
"I love you too." Slowly bending down he pressed his lips to mine and like that I knew we would get through anything together.
