Chapter 19
The rest of the holiday passed quite uneventfully. Most days were spent by the beach and the pool. Before I knew it was the last day and the day before Christmas Eve. Like most other days we spent the morning by the pool before heading to our normal lunchtime spot at the beach.
After an afternoon at the beach we went back to our rooms to get ready for our final family dinner. Picking out a navy blue sun dress I quickly changed before deciding to start packing as our flight was first thing tomorrow morning.
Ben exited the bathroom in maroon just above the knee shorts and a tight, short-sleeved light blue shirt. "Ready to go?" He asked as he looked at me. Looking at the clock, I frowned, I thought we had another hour.
"We're not going to dinner with everyone else," he explained smiling. Still confused I grabbed my purse and followed Ben out of our room after saying a quick goodbye to Laura.
"So where we going?" I asked as we swung our hands between the two of us.
"It's a surprise Goofy," Ben grinned as he pressed the button for the elevator. Rolling my eyes I walked in and waited for it to reach the lobby. He knew how much I hated surprises yet he still insisted on keeping it a secret.
Walking out into the humid heat I walked towards the taxi rank but Ben pulled me in the other direction. "We're walking," he said as he led me in the direction of the beachfront. Walking round the side of the hotel and down a couple of steps we walked along the beach, the gentle sound of waves lapping the shore in the background.
Some families still played on the beach, while groups of friends sat around chatting. A few other couples walked hand in hand along the shoreline as the low sun sent rays of shimmering light across the glistening water.
Quiet chatter and music hummed from restaurants on the other side of us. Fairy lights twinkling in the fading light along the balconies.
The further we walked, the quieter our surroundings became. The people thinned out, as did the restaurants. Soon the path was a gravel one which climbed into the hill. Finally a small building emerged in front of us.
It was wooden with stone pillars which held up a second floor balcony. A paved patio extended out the front of the restaurant where one couple sat already. White fairy lights hung along the rail of the second floor balcony and entangled themselves in the bush which grew up the side of the restaurant. The music of steel drums echoed from the corner of the patio where two men played them.
Walking across the patio and between the scattered tables we entered the restaurant. Small tables filled the room, covered with a white table cloths and silverware. Orange flowers sat in a small vase at the centre of each table.
Walking up to the waiter at the small desk Ben told them the name of our reservation. We were led outside to the patio we had just crossed and seated at the edge of the restaurant. The sea was still visible and could faintly be heard over the sound of the steel drums.
The heat of the day still remained as Ben and I took our places. "This is beautiful," I told Ben as I took in the incredible view. The fact the restaurant was located on a hill made the view even more spectacular.
"I'm glad you like it," he responded as he took my hand in his across the table. Picking up the menu I scanned the local cuisine. Most of the restaurants were catering towards the tourists so we hadn't eaten a lot of the local food.
"Thank you so much for taking me out," I said once the waiter had taken our orders. My fingers intwined with Ben's as I started to play with his fingers.
