“See, as much as you want to hold on to the bitter sore memory that someone has left this world, you are still in it”

Jodi Picoult, My Sister's Keeper

Then (11 Years Ago)

“Rid, wake up! WAKE UP! YOU’RE GOING TO BE LATE!” my brother shouted at me.

“No” I screamed back. It was too early. “Five more minutes, please.” I begged under the covers.

“Mum said to wake up now. You’re going to be late.” He said in reply. I didn’t answer. I was trying to savor my last minutes of sleep before I wake up and accept the fact that today was the biggest day of my life.

“ASTRAEA, WAKE UP.” My mum echoed from outside my room. Then I felt my blanket being pulled away from me. I was suddenly cold. It was May in Greece but it was so cold. I tried to bring it back to my body but it was gone. When I finally opened my eyes, I saw my brother carrying my blanket in his arms.

“NO!” I scream as he started running. I immediately followed him. He ran across the marble floor and went straight to the living room. I was younger than him but I was faster. Even though the floor was cold against my feet and every step left me shiver, I managed to catch up with him. I fell just before I grabbed the blanket from his arms and he fell down beside me. We fought for my blanket.

“It’s mine.” I said and with a fierce tug I managed to take it out of his hands. Michael immediately took it back and with a swift move he stood up and started running again. I had to admit how he moved was a huge proof that he had our dad’s feet. He was going to be a great dancer when he grew up.

“MUM! MICHAEL TOOK MY BLANKET!” I screamed. My mum appeared from the kitchen as I managed to push Michael on the floor again.

“Mike. Rid. Stop. It’s breakfast time. Mike, leave your sister alone. Rid, save your voice, you have a big day today.” she said, strictly. We immediately stopped. We stood up but Michael didn’t give me my blanket I elbowed him and even though he was carrying my blanket he did the same. We elbowed one another as we went to the kitchen. He let my blanket fall to the ground surrendering. I immediately scooped it up and threw it over my shoulder, and pretended to be a super heroin.

“I’m Cat woman.” I said as I started jumping from furniture to furniture. Michael did the same.

“No, Cat woman doesn’t have a cape.” He argued as he chased me.

“You’re batman and I’m cat woman.” I laughed as I jumped for an armchair to the sofa and Michael did the same. He laughed. “Are we playing True American again?” he said as he reached the sofa and pushed me. I fell to the floor.

“You lose.” He said victoriously and ran to the kitchen.

“No! You pushed me. You pushed me! That’s not fair.”  I screamed as I chased to the kitchen.

“You fell.” He exclaimed. He was already sitting to his usual chair. I turned to my mum.

“Mike pushed me.” I said. Mum didn’t pay much attention to me as I complained. She took my blanket off my shoulder and set it to the chair next to Michael.
