"Look I'm not in the mood to talk right now, okay?" I said, trying to control my temper. Joe had called but I was still in the car with Dom. I didn't want to talk to anyone in front of Dom. I wanted to continue this angry silence i had going on. Besides I didn't want him eavesdropping.
"Please Ivy, it's important," he said and he sounded off.
I tried not to sound exasperated. "Can it wait?"
"No it can't. Ivy please I need you to tell your sister something for me," he said in a whisper. There was an urgency, a fear in his voice. Something was wrong.
"My sister? What do you need to tell my sister?" I demanded. My fear and uncertainty about these people was off the charts tonight. I was stupid to have trusted them when they clearly had ulterior motives.
"I don't have much time Ivy please just tell her he's doing the same thing as before, hes following in his footsteps, tell her please she needs to know," he said quickly, panicked now.
"Joe what's going on? What are you talking--" but it was too late, he had already hung up.
I stated at my phone. Following in his footsteps? Who? What the hell was going on?
"Was that Joe?" Dom asked after a long pause.
I nodded even though I didn't really want to talk to him right now.
"Is everything okay?"
Finally I looked up at him. He glanced at me and then back at the road. He seemed concerned but I wasn't sure if i believed it.
"I don't know," I admitted. "He sounded weird and panicky. Do you think he's okay?" Sure it was weird and I wasn't in a trusting mood but he was still my father.
Dom frowned. "He should be. I know he does get stressed easily but I can swing by and check on him after I drop you off."
"Thanks. I'd appreciate that," I said quietly. I didn't bother calling back. If he hung up, he didn't want to talk or couldn't. And he didn't have an interest in talking to me tonight anyways. The rest of the ride was silent as I contemplated Joe's message. What the hell did it mean? What same thing? Whose footsteps? Why bother saying anything at all if it was going to be so unhelpful.
When I came in, Lila came down the stairs.
"Hey I was about to make some tea you want some?" She asked, looking cozy in a familiar over sized hoodie and pajamas.
"No thanks," I muttered, brushing past to head up the stairs. "Oh by the way, Joe wants you to know that hes doing it again and following in his footsteps."
Lila stopped and gave me the most confused look in history. "Say what? Who is following in Joe's footsteps?"
"I don't know. I don't think its Joe's footsteps," I shrugged. It was probably something made up. Maybe he was drunk. "He told me to tell you that 'he is doing the same thing as before' and that 'he is following in his footsteps,'" I quirked my fingers around the phrases and sighed in exasperation. "Look I don't know what it means or if it even means anything at all, but I figured I should say something because he sounded pretty panicked."
Lila frowned. "Joe didn't say who this 'he' was?"
"Nope and he hung up before I could ask," I replied. "Look he sounded weird so maybe he was drunk or just making it up. It doesn't make any sense at all but I figured on the slim chance it meant something..."
"Okay well...thanks for telling me I guess," she said. She actually seemed to be seriously considering Joe's message. Which was odd. It was so cryptic and essentially useless...and what would Joe have to say to Lila anyways? Why couldn't he tell me? Why did only Lila need to know? Especially since she didn't seem to know what he was talking about either. All these secrets and keeping me out of the loop was irritating me further. I couldn't believe that even Joe was doing it to me now.
