CHAPTER 1

I had been running nonstop for over the last month. I had no idea why. Everywhere I went monsters would follow me. I had no idea where I was going, so when I found out I had ended up in Manhattan, surprise took me over. I was here and I had nowhere to go. I had no plan. Quite a disastrous situation if you ask me.

Another monster burst out behind me. "Aw man!" I yelled as I started running. It chased after me; I didn't know what type of monster it was or what it looked like, I was too busy trying to get away. My only weapon (which I had been lucky to find in the first place) was a small bronze dagger which had been left in an ally way. And yet I got enough luck to get that broken in the jaws of a giant monster dog. So, I was left defenseless.

A sudden pulling came at me. It was like being torn apart. Part of me wanted to go one way, and the other part of me wanted to go the other way. Without thinking too much about it, I ran to the left. Heading up the street with the monster close behind, I saw a huge mansion. Beautiful and tall, I went crazy with longing. Suddenly a huge trashcan exploded in the monsters face.

I can do that sometimes. Don't ask me how; I'm still trying to figure that out myself. If I get stressed enough things around me will work to my advantage, blocking or fighting the monsters. It didn't do much, but it saved my life multiple times.

The door to the gleaming mansion opened up, spitting out a boy who had a look of amazement and worry on his face. "Come over here!" He yelled, gesturing me over. People say never trust strangers. I say over monsters and a strange mortal, go with the stranger. I ran to him almost overwhelmed with relief. I had found a place to hide. As soon as I was in arms reach, he thrust out his hand pulling me inside and shutting the door rapidly.

"Over here." He said gently leading me to a sofa. "Seems like you've had the harder journey here." He gently pushed me down, spreading me across the couch. I was in a bit of a daze. After living in the streets for a few months and suddenly getting royal treatment, it would make sense how I was.

"Are you okay?" he asked when I didn't say anything in response. I looked up at him, trying to process his words. After a moment I replied.

"Oh, yeah, I'm fine. Thanks for getting me away from that thing."

He laughed. "Don't mention it. I'm Carter by the way. Carter Kane. And you are?"

I smiled. He was quite nice.

"I'm Nicole." I said. "Nicole Dayalin. It's nice to meet some who's not out to kill me."

Carter smiled. "Yeah, magicians have it a little harder than the mortals."

Magician?" I asked. "Is that what I am? Is that why I can sometimes control things?"

After everything else it wasn't hard to believe there were such a thing as magicians.

"Yeah. You seem to be a very powerful one, too. Without training, it was surprising how well you controlled those trashcans."

I laughed. "I don't know how much control I had over those. I don't even know how I do it." I sat up. Lying down was giving me the urge to fall asleep.

He must have seen the weariness in my gaze.

"Why don't we show you to your room. I bet you're awfully tired. Most of our students are when they first arrive."
