Chapter Eight | Mysterious Boy
The dark-haired blue eyed boy walked towards his house. There was something about him, that had drawn me towards him...
I just wanted to know why he had done that for me. I wanted to know his name, his age, where he went to school...
I really had so many questions, but at the same time I wanted to get to know him a little better, you know?
I wasn't really sure how I was feeling. I guess I had some mixed feelings about him. I've never felt this way about anyone before. But I wasn't going to let a few feelings get in the way of what my current goal: getting home safely.
At Home
Before I opened the door, I expected to see my mother standing there saying, "Did you do you homework today?"
or, "How did you do on your history test?" or something like that. But instead I was greeted by my little sister, Abby. "You're a great big sister, Cat!" she said, and hugged my legs, considering that's as high as she can reach.
"Um... What?" I said, confused about how my sister was behaving. "My teacher says that saying nice things to people is a good thing to do." said Abby.
"Well, do you really mean what you said to me? Be honest, Abby." I said.
"Nope." Abby said.
"Okay, then tell me, what do you actually think about me as a sister?" I asked, hoping to get an answer out of her.
"I can't tell you."
"Why not?" I asked.
"My teacher said that saying things that might hurt someone's feelings is mean." said Abby.
I think that says enough.
After this weird conversation I had with my sister, I decided to look for my mom.
I walked into the kitchen, and I saw a note on the fridge. It said:
Dear Catherine Honey,
I've got something very important to do at work. I won't be back until midnight, so you'll probably be asleep by then. I trust you to take care of Abby for me. Dinner is in the fridge.
~Mom xoxo
Well, I could already tell this was going to be a long day. I don't really like taking care of Abby, because she makes a big mess of everything. Then she whines, and cries, and always says she's hungry.
[3 hours later]
Two bowls of Lucky Charms, a dozen fish sticks, 1 hour of Barbie doll role play, and lots of tears later, I finally did it.
I took care of the kid.
Abby fell asleep on the couch, next to two Barbie dolls, and a half-finished fish stick in her tiny little hands.
It was actually kind of nice watching her sleep. She looked peaceful for once. Usually she was running around, screaming and jumping all over the walls.
Even though my mother put all the candy we had on top of the refrigerator, she would always seem like she was on sugar or something. How does a small child like Abby climb all the way to the top of a refrigerator?
Watching her sleep almost made me want to just fall asleep right next to her. However, I still had homework to do.
[2 hours later]
Surprisingly, we barely had any homework, so it only took me about 2 hours to complete it.
I then brushed my teeth and went to bed.
The Next Morning
I woke up around 6:30 am. I brushed my teeth and washed my face. I then brushed my shoulder-length hair. I then put on a blue shirt and jeans. I put on my backpack and decided to head out the door.
I then got on the bus. Oh God, here we go again. I thought.
[At School]
I was so glad I finally got out of that smelly bus. The second I walked into the school, I realized that I probably should've just stayed home today.
When I walked into the school, immediately people start to whisper and point. Oh right, I'm still Ugly Catherine, I thought. None of these people even knew me before. People in my history class could barely remember my first name. But now, all of a sudden, everyone knows me, and everyone knows who I am. It's not as great as most people think it would be.
I walked to my locker, and people were still staring at me. Did they really have nothing else better to do? Then, I saw him.
The guy that rescued me from nearly choking to death. The dark-haired, blue eyed boy. Now at least I know he was a high schooler.
He shut his locker door shut, and started to walk in my direction. It didn't really look like he was trying to talk to me though. He did notice me looking at him though, and once he did, he looked at me too.
"Hi." I said.
"Hi." he replied, and then walked away.
That was so weird...
