8. THE CALL

Three days later my phone rang and her harmonic voice was like calm after the storm. My thoughts finally came together and my heart slowed down. I wasn't worried anymore. She was okay.

"Hello, Jason. It's me. Uhm, I'm really sorry but I needed some time to think. Can you meet me in an hour by our bench?"

"Yeah, of course."

"Okay, bye."

And then she hung up on me.

My heart started beating fast once again. What did she want from me? She sounded so cold and worried. I got dressed, fixed my brown hair and met her at the bench.

She didn't look quite okay.

"Sweetie, need a hug?" I said, hoping I wasn't being too pushy.

"I'm good, thanks. Sit down, I need to tell you something." she said, sounding as cold as ever.

I sat down next to her and waited for the time she'll speak again.

"I heard a lot about you. People on the street say that you're a fuckboy ..."

"You asked about me?" I interrupted.

"Don't speak now. I need to say this. I figured that it wouldn't be good for us to go on where we left off, because you're just going to walk away like everybody else before you. And it's not really your fault, but I'm not able to trust anymore. And when my eyes become all green, you'll leave nothing but scars on my heart. That's what you've been doing with all those other girls. Oh gosh, I said too much ... Forget it."

"Could you please explain that part about your eyes? Don't they change by the season?"

"Uhm ... Forget it. I can't tell you. But it's true then. You'll leave. I should've known better. I actually thought you were different."

That's when I said the most cliché thing ever: "But, I am different."

"Oh c'mon, don't bullshit me. What were you doing before you first saw me? You were checking out girls, right? And then I came along and you thought about how perfect I am because of my exterior. Jason, let's face it. You don't love me. You love the idea of me. You love the blue in my eyes. You'll leave. And I can't put myself through this pain once again."

"But your eyes don't have blue in them anymore."

"Wait, what? That can't be. Not again. You should go."

"What's wrong with the colour green? I'm not leaving even if your eyes become purple. I really do like you, Lorelay."

And then she said something that changed everything.
