Greetings, Ink jars. Professor Lewis E.P. here. Today we're going to discuss something very important in writing: Genre!
What is a "Genre?" Basically the setting for your book. If you chose a "Fantasy" genre, your book will revolve in a magical land OR there will be mythical elements in your story. If you chose a "Mystery," theme, the story will revolve around a question, an event with uncertain elements.
Why does this matter? Because the genre you chose will help you know the rules of the universe your story takes place in, gives you a good starting point, and widens your horizons.
How do you chose which genre to set your story in? Well, think about what the story is about! If it's about pixies and a magical quest, it's obviously going to be Fantasy. If you need ideas, Google search different types on genres! There are about one million!
You may want to get inspired or gain some more info on your genre. Here are some helpful tips and ideas:
1.) Read books with that particular genre
2.) Watch movies in that genre!
3.) Go on Pintrist and check out sections they have on such genres (EXAMPLE: Fantasy Characters, The 18th century)
4.) Just do research!
WARNING: Don't do too much research! It will overwhelm you and you'll get bored.
Definitely try every genre. You may think that you hate horror, but once you start writing a horror story, you'll love it! Just write short stories in every genre! Be open to reading new genres! It's very important to your creative senses to try different things which you've never experienced!
