Greetings, Ink Jars, welcome back to Professor Lewis' Advice book!

Today, we're going to discuss one of my new favorite topics...WORLD BUILDING! I have a hard time believing that I haven't written on this before, but apparently I have not.

This is probably geared more to fantasy and science fiction authors, but it is also very interesting. I'll do another chapter on world building for non-fantasy worlds. But anyway, here's the first one:

Starting small:

1.) Start with the initial county/province/galaxy in which the majority of your action will be occurring and fill in these segments:

Geography: Names of at least two rivers, one mountain range, an ocean, a desert, the capital and maybe two minor cities (depending on where your character visits). *Draw a map

Climate: Hot? Cold? Seasons?

Government: It is important to know what sort of government your country has.  Is it a monarchy? Democracy? Totalitarian? Constitutional Monarchy? That will really help.

Citizens: Who are the different people groups within your country? What do they look like? It is rare to find one people group in a country--even a small one.

These will determine some major things within your country which are very important. Join us in the next chapter for more in depth building.

Your faithful writer, Lewis
