Two years later...
Sunlight streams through my curtains and into my duvet which I had covered my head with. Maybe if I try to block out the signs of the morning it would go away. Eventually, I throw of the duvet and rub my eyes, then smooth my hair down. I groggily step out of bed and pull open the curtains. But they're so thin that it barely makes the room lighter. I pick out a grey skirt that goes down to my ankles, a vest and a grey cardigan from my plain wooden wardrobe. It's one of the only pieces of furniture in my room.
The shower fully wakes me up; it's freezing cold. Despite the water almost always being this temperature, I never get used to it. As well as the water being cold, the shower only runs for two minutes per person. Both of these things are supposed to 'conserve resources'. I step out of the shower into the warm air then put on my plain Abnegation clothes.
For breakfast, I eat stale bread. But before anyone begins to eat, we bless our table. I join hands with my brother Caleb (on my right), and with my Mother (on my left). My Father sits at the head of the table. The bread doesn't taste good, but I just have to remind myself that I'm lucky it isn't mouldy like yesterday's.
'Are you nervous about today, Beatrice? Caleb?' my Mother asks us. I nod politely, then turn to Caleb for his answer.
'Slightly. I'm just worried that my descicion will effect others, and not me.' Caleb is always efortlessly Abnegation: unlike myself, he doesn't have to try to be selfless. But I remember what he said to me last night about the Choosing Ceremony.
'Tommorow, we must think of our family. But we must also think of ourselves.'
His words are still in my mind now. Caleb never thinks of himself. Only ever of others.
