Erudite, Abnegation, Dauntless. The three possibilities of which faction to choose. Erudite, Abnegation, Dauntless. I find myself admiring each of them in totally different ways. Erudite: the intelligent. Always pursuing knowledge. Abnegation: the selfless. Always putting others before themselves. And Dauntless: the brave. Always fearless and courageous, no matter what the cost. Those three factions were my results in the aptitude test, meaning I have an aptitude for all three. I've only ever heard of an aptitude for one faction. Tori, my test administrator, told me I had an abnormal result. She gave me a warning, said I was in danger... because I'm 'Divergent'. I don't know what that means, but I think it may have something to do with getting inconclusive test results. Tori wouldn't tell me. When Tori said I was in danger, I was all shaken up. I was scared, but a tiny part of me was pleased as well. Divergence... something that sets me apart from the crowd. Something unique...good. But now, it just seems to be making my desicion a lot harder.

'Prior, Caleb'. I look over at my brother as he stands and starts toward the stage. I notice his legs shaking slightly and his eyes flicking around nervously. Caleb has always seemed like the strong one to me, he would always look after and console me. Seeing him this nervous scares me. It's unnerving. Caleb stumbles down the isle and steps up onto the stage. I have been so concerned about myself the last few days thet I didn't once think about how he might be feeling. I'll try now to be more selfless. I watch as Caleb takes a knife from Marcus. One new knife for each person. A new life for each person. Caleb turns to the bowls, each containing a different substance. He slowly drags the knife along the heel of his hand. I see tears well up in his eyes, but he doesn't let them fall. I look into Caleb's eyes and see hurt. A drop of blood falls into the bowl full of water.

Caleb chose Erudite. I thought-I thought I knew  that Caleb would choose Abnegation. He is the most selfless person I know. But he didn't. He chose Erudite.
