Chapter Eight (Beatrice)

Caleb chose Erudite. He left our parents. Just like that.

'Prior, Beatrice' Marcus' voice cuts through the hushed murmurs of the Abnegation and Erudite. I feel numb from the shock of what Caleb just did as I stand. He is walking back up the isle, and for a second we brush past each other. Time slows down as I stare directly into his eyes. But he looks purposfully in the opposite direction, unable to meet my gaze. I continue walking, my footsteps echoing all around me. When I reach the stage, I step up onto it and take the knife from Marcus. It feels surprisingly light in my hand, the sharp silver blade glinting in the sunlight. The five bowls sit infront of me. I make a small insicion into my palm. No blood appears. I press harder. My whole hand suddenly looks bright red and feels sticky. I can't leave my parents after what Caleb did.

I drop my blood onto the Abnegation stones.

A drop of crimson blood slowly trickles down a smooth grey stone, leaving behind a red trail of blood...
