My Mother's fingers work deftly as she gently brushes out my fair hair and secures it into a tight, neat bun. We are about to leave for the Choosing Ceremony, and despite it being such a big deal, I can't look any different from usual. Just the same old hair; clothes; and no make-up. As the last pins are slid into my hair, I look up into the mirror infront of me. I'm curious to see what I'll find, not out of vanity, but fascination. I haven't been allowed to look in a mirror for weeks, and a lot can change about a girl's appearance in that time. A girl with pale skin, light blonde hair, wide eyes and a prominent nose and cheekbones stares back at me. I blink, and so does she. It slowly dawns on me that the girl is me.
'That's it, Beatrice', my mother says softly then slides the panel back over the mirror. I look down at my hands, ashamed for looking at myself for too long. I thank my mother then walk into the hallway to wait for Caleb and my father to get ready.
I'm only starting to feel nervous now, on the bus to the Hub. honestly, I felt nervous before, but just tried to hide it from myself. The Hub is a massive building. It rises above most others, it's two metal prongs that stick out like horns dominating the skyline. The whole building is black, and has an atmosphere radiating power around it. As the bus gets nearer to the Hub, a group of Candor gets on. There are no available seats left, so I stand and offer my seat to a young girl. She takes it without thanking me, and now only Abnegation members are left standing. However, I didn't give my seat away because I wanted to, like most other Abnegation. I only did it because I knew that is what Caleb would have done. And my Mother and Father. And the rest of Abnegation.
