I gaze up at the Hub, trying to get my eyes to settle at the top. But I get a crick in my neck trying, so lower my head back down to earth. Finding my Mother and Father at the rear of a crowd in the Hub's lobby, I walk over to them. A skinny, small boy stands in my way and I'm about to push past him when I catch Caleb's eye. I mutter 'excuse me' and the boy moves.
'Why aren't we going in?' I ask my Mother when I reach her.
'I'm not sure...I think they are having trouble seating everyone... more people than they expected turned up...' She says this with a look of confusion on her face; I'm not sure why; more people than expected turned up- so what? Just as I'm about to ask my Mother so confused, the crowd surges forward and we follow. After walking along a short corridor and up a few steps, we reach a cavernous room with a stage in the centre. The walls are white, and at one side, a floor-to-ceiling window allows sunlight to stream in. Most of the seats in the room are occupied, but my family and I manage to find four consecutive seats. We sit down, I and see that I've ended up sitting next to the boy who I almost pushed in the lobby. He smiles shyly at me and I nod politely in his direction then turn to the centre of the room. Only when the last of the Dauntless have sat down and the rest of the Candor stopped talking does our leader, Marcus, step onto the stage. The atmosphere in the room suddenly changes as everyone in it stops fidgeting and listens intently for Marcus's words.
'Welcome, to our new generation of sixteen-year-olds, and their families', Marcus begins and is met by a round of applause. Marcus continues to talk, but I tune out, lost in my own world. I begin to become aware of the steady pulsing of my heart slowly getting faster. My breathing starts to speed up and sweat collects on my palms. I need to calm down, I tell myself. Marcus' voice becomes clear in my fuzzy head again.
'Aria, Shepard, Marcus says, and an Amity girl wearing red jeans and a tight yellow crop top gets out of her seat then walks to the stage. She picks up one of the many knives, cuts a small slit in her hand then drops some of her blood into the Amity's bowl. I realise with a jolt that the girl's surname started with a letter 's'. People are being called up in reverse alphabetical order. I have only three more letters to go before it's my tur to choose. Only about ten people. I don't know what to do.
I.
Am.
Not.
Ready.
