(7) Fragile Peace

The next few weeks passed with relative peace. Ashley had finally come back to school and Yvonne had officially become a part of our little gang. I slept so much better after she had reassured me that she was looking out for me. Sometimes she even came by during the evenings to chat, though now she had started to use the front door. It scared me too much when she used the windows, reminded me of Aiden too much.

Also if there was one thing I was envious of her, it was the ability to remember every single thing she heard or read. Which meant she didn't need to study and homework was done in a flash for her. And the fact that she didn't need sleep? If only I could have had that ability. Sometimes I felt like the days were a few hours too short. Especially when schoolwork started piling up. Luckily for me, she dropped a few helpful tips every now and then when she visited.

Still it felt like these peaceful weeks were fragile and wouldn't last much longer. If I thought about that, Yvonne definitely did. She was really getting tense after three weeks had passed with nothing happening. But we continued on like normal.

I was even beginning to feel safe in my own home, even if Yvonne weren't there.  The bruises were finally completely gone! Man, they had stuck around for so long and I was getting tired of always covering them up. Ashley and the others who had experienced the attack had brushed it off as a freak coincidence that they all had anaemia and those weird dreams.

Autumn soon began to give way for winter. The weather had changed drastically and the days were basically just freezing lay cold. It even began to snow early on in December. Yvonne was loving it. She could be outside as much as she wanted to without feeling exhausted since it was almost cloudy the whole day.

The whole thing with Aiden was beginning to slip my mind until a startling incident made every fear I'd had about him come back.

Paula Clark, a 34 year old nurse living in a house just beside us, was found dead in her home. All blood drained from her body and a bloodstained note saying:

'You thought I was done? Far from it.'

Everything about it screamed Aiden and I could feel my heart thump loudly in my chest as I watched the news with my parents. Dad had even been on the crime scene. He never liked it when it happened that close to our home and he really hoped they would capture the suspect soon. It was something I hoped as well, but I had my doubts.

Aiden was a vampire and couldn't be caught by Yvonne or her parents. They had tried that for 11 years, so what was the chances my father might?

Probably below zero.

I sighed and fished my phone out from the pocket of my jeans. I had to text Yvonne, though I was pretty sure she already knew about it too.

[Hey. Seen the news?]

It took barely a minute before her reply came.

[Yeah. He's taunting us.]

I decided to send another text.

[How did your parents react?]

[Mom's not handling it too well. She sees too much of Malik in Aiden and seeing him do all of this is giving her horrible flashbacks to her past. Dad's really furious.]

I felt my heart ache for Yvonne's mom. It had to be horrible to see your own son turn into a sadistic monster. Especially after she had tried to shield him from Malik's influence.
