Chapter 3 (Angel Boy)

I opened my eyes, hearing the soft waves and the smell of ocean water. I felt the grainy sand under me. I sat up, stretching. “Good morning,” I said into my yawn to Warren who lay beside me.

“Good morning,” he mumbled back, sitting up with me.

Then, I woke out of my daze, my eyes fluttering to Warren. “Why am I out here?” I asked, panicked.

Warren yawned. “You fell asleep while sketching.”

“Well then, why the hell didn’t you wake me? My uncle and aunt are going to be pissed!”

Warren frowned. “They called right about the time you went into a deep sleep. I didn’t want to wake you so I just told them we were camping out on the beach, which they were more than happy to say yes to.”

I glared at him. “Why the hell didn’t you wake me? I would have been perfectly happy to walk home,” I said, looking down at my unfinished drawing of the moonlight on the water.

Warren shrugged. “You just looked so tired and you know, being near the ocean and all… I thought you wanted to be closer to them,” he said, silently saying the last part.

I glared at him again, gathering my stuff up as I stood up, wiping the sand off my clothing. “When did you fall asleep?” I asked, in an accusing tone.

Warren stood up, holding his hands up defensively. “Hey, I didn’t try anything, okay? I’m not that much of a man whore. I fell asleep a little after you did.”

I put my hands on my hips, giving him a dirty look. “How can I believe you after all you told me yesterday? Also, I don’t need comfort, okay? I very well accepted that my parents are dead. I don’t need a sleepover by their grave,” I said, rolling my eyes.

“Then why did you give up swimming?”

I stared at Warren, who had the same expression as me. Why would he ask that?

“Lacey, I—.”

I shook my head, walking away. “You’re an asshole,” I said, not looking back.

I stomped into the house, meeting my aunt and uncle in the kitchen, eating their breakfast. “Lacey! How was the sleepover with Warren?” my aunt said, smiling.

I rolled my eyes, stomping upstairs. “Just dandy,” I said sarcastically.

I went straight into my room, slamming the door shut. I was so shocked. Warren had no right to say that! About my parents death, too!

I heard the front door open downstairs. “Hey Mr. Sawyer, is Lacey home?” I heard Warren say.

Ugh. I rolled my eyes, listening in on their talking. “Yes, she is. She seems a bit… Harassed. Maybe you should give her time to cool down.”

Good job, Uncle. Get him out of here. “Please, this is important,” Warren pleaded.

I sighed. Please don’t let him come up here! “Okay Warren, you can try talking to her,” my Uncle said.

Damn it! I heard Warren’s footsteps coming upstairs. I hid under my blanket. I knew this was a childish thing to do but I didn’t want to face him. I heard knocking on my door. “Lacey?” I heard Warren call out.
