Tyler quickly closed his eyes and sank into the kiss. His tears had stopped flowing from his eyes and he pulled away, looking up at Josh.
"I'm sorry..." Josh whispered.
"Don't be." Tyler said, giving a small smile. He was glad that kiss took place but he was too confused right now. He didn't know Josh was into him or guys, rather. Tyler didn't even know he was into guys until he met Josh, really. "I, uh, I have to go, you know, sort some things out I think." He breathed.
"Oh," Josh said, feeling a little down. "Okay. Just call me later so I know you're okay?"
"I will. Later, Josh." Tyler said, opening the door and making his way down the street and began his walk to the pier while Josh stayed behind and slid down against the door. Joan came down just as he sat down.
"You okay, sweetie?" She asked, going over to her son. "Did Tyler leave already?"
"Yeah, he did. Just now." He put his knees to his chest and placed his head down into his arms.
"What's the matter?" She leaned down so she was level with Josh. "You and Tyler didn't fight, did you?"
"No, no we didn't fight. The opposite actually. We, uh, we kissed." Josh choked. He felt a ball of emotions coming up so he tried his best to push it down but nothing would work. Soon, tears came pouring out and he fell on his side, moving away from his mother.
"Aw it's okay, Josh." She cooed as she tried her best to pick her son up, in spirit and physically, so he was sitting up right then wiped his tears. "I thought you liked him. You guys get along really well and I think you're the cutest."
"I do like him, mom. I do but I didn't know he liked me." Josh sniffled, wiping away the rest of his tears. "But, when we kissed, I felt like he regretted it. I mean, he left right after. What else am I supposed to think?"
"Honey, he probably left so he could think things over and figure out what he's going to do. It's not often best friends kiss, you know." She chuckled. "Don't over analyze this; you'll only hurt yourself." She hugged him tightly and stood him up.
"I guess you're right. I just don't want to lose him because of a kiss. I mean, we can get over it if nothing comes out of it. I still want him as my friend." Josh was stable now, walking to the kitchen and pulling out some juice to drink.
"I'm sure he does too. You guys make a great pair." Joan encouraged, making her morning coffee and going to the living room.
"Thanks, mom." Josh told his mom, hugging her before she sat down. He then left to go upstairs and get ready.
---
It had been hours before Tyler finally called Josh, inviting him to the pier so they could talk. Tyler really did think things over and finally came to an answer for himself and Josh.
When Josh arrived at the pier, he saw Tyler was all the way at the end, looking out at the water so he made his way down there.
"Hey." He greeted, startling Tyler a bit. "Sorry, didn't mean to scare you." Josh laughed a bit. He was feeling a bit better about the whole situation but he was still on edge.
"You're fine." Tyler smiled back. He really liked seeing Josh smile because he thought he looked absolutely adorable when he did.
"So, what's up?" Josh asked, moving next to him and resting his arms on the railing.
"Nothing really. I just have something to tell you." Tyler added. He felt like getting this over with. The awkwardness between the two was killing him.
"Alright, shoot." Josh looked at Tyler, nodding. He, too, wanted the awkward time to end and just wanted to hang out with his best friend again. They'd known each other for about four months now and Josh liked how close they'd become.
"Alright," Tyler started. He shifted so he was looking directly at his friend. "Well, for starters that kiss was pretty unexpected." He laughed and Josh smiled. "But I liked it, really. I feel like part of me has been wanting to do that for a long time but another part kept saying 'No, he's your best friend; best friends don't do that.'"
"Yeah." Josh didn't say much else. He didn't want to interrupt the flow of things.
"I don't even know. I just want to be friends again." Tyler beamed. He was proud of himself for getting that off his chest. "I do like you though, Josh, and I was wondering something as well."
"I like you too, Ty. You can ask, go right ahead." Josh smiled a big smile and brought Tyler in for a quick hug.
"Okay. Well, I know this is short notice but, would you like to go on a date with me tonight?" Tyler asked, stepping out of the embrace. Josh stood there with his mouth open.
"Words work too, Josh." Tyler said, jokingly pushing his backwards.
"Oh, right, yeah. Yes, yes, of course I would. It sounds great." He said, gathering his words little by little.
"That's great!" Tyler smiled. "I'll see you later?"
"What, noo." Josh whined, dragging out the 'o'. Tyler laughed at him.
"What do you mean, 'noo'?"
"I wanna hang out with you! I haven't seen you since eight this morning and it's three in the afternoon, now!" Josh pouted. He just wanted to spend time with Tyler.
"Josh, I need to prepare for this very important date that's going down tonight. I don't want shit to go wrong so I'd like to be ready, is that okay?" Tyler asked Josh, putting both hands on the smaller male's shoulders.
"Yeah, yeah, whatever." Josh continued to pout. Tyler just smiled and kissed his cheek, making Josh look away and blush a little.
"I'm picking you up at eight so, be ready!" Tyler called, walking away. Josh just sighed and leaned against the railing again. He was glad things worked out the way they did. Now he just had to be ready for the date.
