Part Three
"Hello?" You answer your phone, stopping it from ringing frantically on the table next to your laptop.
"Oh, good, I caught you." Your mother's voice floats through the line. Maybe you should have checked the caller a little more carefully. "Oh, sweetie, it is so good to hear your voice." she gushes.
"Mom, why are you awake at 5AM?" You ask, your curiosity needing to be satisfied. For your mother to be calling you at this hour, she would have to be out of bed insanely early. It was a struggle, when you had first moved, trying to figure out the time changes. Now, it was a natural thing.
"I've missed you, I wanted to talk to you. Besides, I can always go back to bed, later." she insists.
Who is she trying to fool? You know that she won't do that. She is clearly wide awake, probably already on her fourth cup of coffee and half way through cleaning the house. You smile at the idea, it is just crazy enough to perfectly fit her.
"Okay, mom." You laugh a little. It is nice to hear her voice. "Well, how are you? I've been meaning to call, but I've been busy with work and everything."
"Oh, I've been fine. Busy, you know how this time of year gets at work." she replied, you could hear the happiness in her voice.
As she continued to tell you all about work and the upcoming endeavor it held, you would add a few appropriate reactions when needed. While she brought you up to news on family and friends back home, you glanced up to see Tom returning from wherever it was he would go each morning.
He'd be up and gone fairly early, if he knew you'd be home when he got back, he'd return with a coffee from the shop down the street, some times he would even swing by work to bring you the coffee. You never asked where he escaped to each morning, you supposed it really wasn't your business.
"Morning, Lovely." He greeted you, setting the familiar take away cup down beside your laptop. "I didn't mean to interrupt." Tom smiled sheepishly, noticing you were on the phone.
"Morning, thanks." You smile nodding toward the cup. "Oh, it's just mom." You reply, not bothering to hide the fact you were talking over your mother.
"Tell her I send my best, yeah?" Tom added. You nod in agreement.
"Honey?" Your mother's voice startled you. "Sweetie? Are you listening?"
"Yes, mom." You groan and take a drink of your coffee.
"Who was that? Do you have a man there? Who is he? How come you didn't mention him?" Her questions came just as you expected them to.
You may have forgot to mention Tom living with you, the last two or four times you'd spoke with your mother.
"It's just Tom." You brush it off, hoping it will shut her up. You don't feel like explaining his disastrous divorce to her, not in front of him.
"Oh, well he's around early." She comments, her voice slightly suspicious.
"It isn't that early." You defend.
Looking up, you realize Tom isn't in the room. Listening for a moment, you feel a little relieved when you hear the shower running. You may as well tell her, before she sends a PI after you or worse, calls Tom himself.
"Look, mom, what I am about to tell you can't be repeated. To anybody." You warn her. "Do you swear, you will not say a word?"
"Yes, yes." You can picture her rolling her eyes at you.
"Tom's been living here. He's..."
She gasps loudly. "Honey, no! He is a married man! Oh for fucks sake, have I not raised you to be better than this?"
