Have you ever wondered what the world would be like if time travel was discovered? Would we have flying cars and machines that could take us wherever we wanted so we wouldn’t have to use our feet? Or would we be stuck in the Dark Ages? A mixture of both medieval and ancient, where there would be princesses and knights in shining armour, perhaps rescuing their damsel in distresses from prehistoric dinosaurs? Whatever the case, discovering time travel could be the beginning of a new era of mankind. We could have whatever we desired, whenever we wanted. It could be the start of something spectacular…
Or, it could mean the end of everything we know. It could mean bringing on an age of darkness, madness, murder, throwing all natural balance out of the window. After all, there is a reason for everything to be in perfect opposites. As the great, Isaac Newton once said, “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” For humans to start messing around with time, the consequences could be disastrous. We could potentially bring on the apocalypse ourselves. It would be quite ironic if the extinction of human beings was caused by, well, human beings.
I, for one, had always been fascinated with time travel. The possibilities were endless. However, I wasn’t under any impressions that the concept could actually become a reality. As much as we were an advanced race, we weren’t that advanced. As a kid, I used to be obsessed with those science shows that they played on ABC, rushing home from school and throwing myself in front of the TV. I would be enthralled for hours at a time, wondering if there was ever a possibility that one day, I could be the first time traveller in existence. The notion never left me, even as I grew older and started high school. Deep down, I knew I would never give up on my somewhat, childish fantasy.
Never in my wildest dreams did I expect that that day for my obsession to be brought into reality, was far closer than I would have guessed. As an average sixteen year old, I was almost finished with high school, sneaking out when my parents were unaware, secretly discussing time travel with Lucy Holloway and, at the same time, passing all of my classes with flying colours. Not once did I stop to think about the bigger picture, that there were more important things than education and friends.
I was in for a rude awakening that was for sure.
