I woke up with a start.
“Whoa! Where am I?” I said to no one in particular. I heard a squawk coming from my right side and I saw the baby pterodactyl I rescued sleeping beside me. My heart melted. He was actually really cute! I looked around and realised I was in a giant cave. When I say giant, I mean giant! Can you imagine at least 100 pterodactyls in one place? That’s how large this cave was. Everywhere I looked, sleeping giant bird dinosaur things. It was very disturbing and I felt despair because I had no idea where Will and Lucy could be. I groaned inwardly. What was I supposed to do now? Something sharp digging into my thigh caught my attention. I put my hand in my pocket and something sliced into my hand.
“Ouch!” I yelped. I looked at my hand and there was a large scratch which blood was now pouring freely from. I cursed. I took my T-shirt of quickly and ripped a piece of cloth of. I was still surprised at how much stronger I was in this place! I wrapped the cloth around my injured hand and ripped another piece to put around this strange object in my shorts. I pulled it out and realised it was what I picked up when I rescued the baby pterodactyl. I studied it intently. It was blue and extremely sharp; it looked like a squashed pentagon. It felt soft and squishy. As I held it, it seemed to shudder and vibrate. It was pulsing as well, like a small blue heart. A sharp sound against the cave wall bought me back to reality. I hastily wrapped the pentagon alien thing back up and shoved it into my pocket. I wasn’t ready to show it to anyone yet. I stood up tense, ready for anything. I faced the cave entrance and saw a shadow come around the corner. I braced myself but I didn’t need to worry. It was only Will.
“Oh, Will!” I exclaimed and without thinking I embraced him. He wrapped his arms around me and I could have stayed there forever until he yelped with pain.
“What is it?” I asked anxiously.
“Is there something in your pocket Alex?” I froze, should I show him or not? I decided to show him, I trusted him now. I took the pentagon out of my pocket and showed it to him. He gasped in wander and asked to hold it.
“Be careful, it’s extremely sharp,” I said showing him my wound. He took the pentagon from me and it seemed to shudder harder. It was shaking! Then it shifted and attached itself to Will’s face!
“Ahh!” he screamed. His voice was muffled. I stood there panicking. The more I waited the more he suffocated. Finally I did something. I got my fingers around the blue pentagon and pulled. Pulled and pulled until it finally came of off Will’s face but then it went straight onto mine! It was horrible! It felt like when your cat sits on your face when you’re asleep, but this actually hurts! It’s so cold that it burns. As I was struggling with it, I heard voices in my head. Lucy’s voice more than anybody else’s. But her voice was cold and she was saying awful things: Will would never like you! You’re going to fail this quest and bring everyone else down with you! Her voice was ringing in my head as I struggled to breathe. One sentence in particular kept popping in my head: I’m going to betray you Alex; you will never win and the Lord of Destruction is going kill you! Suddenly air filled my lungs and I was on the floor gasping. Will was struggling with the evil object and he wrapped it up with my piece of cloth.
“Don’t touch that again!” he said. He was gasping for breath and he looked angry. Did I say angry? More like furious. Maybe he’d heard the voices as well.
“That thing is evil!” I said. “I heard voices,”
“Me to,” Will confided looking shaken. “They were scary,”
“I heard… I heard Lucy,” I whispered. Will looked up, astonished. I wandered who he’d heard then.
“What?” But then I heard another scrabbling sound and Lucy came into view. Still thinking about the voices, she was the last person I wanted to see. I could tell Will was a little wary of her to.
“What’s going on guys?” she asked. I looked at Will and shook my head slightly. No way was I telling Lucy about the pentagon thingy.
“Nothing,” Will said. She frowned at me and I looked away.
“Fine!” she exclaimed storming away. Some of the pterodactyls were waking up and the cave was being filled with screeches and the sound of wings beating. Will came and sat down beside me.
“What were the voices saying Alex?” he asked urgently.
“Horrible things,” I whispered. “Lucy said that she was going to betray us!”
“Of course that’s not going to happen,” he said. I’m not so sure about that. She had been acting really weird lately and being jealous of me definitely doesn’t help.
“What do we do now?” I asked him.
“We need to get out of here,” he answered. “I don’t feel very comfortable near these pterodactyls,”
I left Will to tell Lucy and I went back to the baby pterodactyl. I put my hand on his head and he made a strange purring sound, deep from within him.
“What do I do now?” I said out loud.
You must follow your heart
My eyes widened in shock. Who said that? It seemed too have come from inside my head! I looked at the baby in wander and he was looking back at me intently.
Was that you? I thought back.
Yes, my name is Raphael.
What if I don’t know where my heart is going? I thought continuing the weird mind conversation.
You need to have a little faith.
That’s easier said than done I thought critically. With all the things going on in my life, talking to a pterodactyl in my head was normal now!
You saved my life. Whenever you need me just call.
Thank you. I thought gratefully but Raphael had turned away.
‘You need to have a little faith’ I kept replaying that one sentence in my head.
“Are you ready Alex?” I looked up startled. There was Will with his hand outstretched. Lucy behind him was looking extremely grouchy. I had a feeling she’s not going to be talking to me any time soon.
“Yes I’m ready,” I said taking his hand. The three of us walked to the entrance of the cave and I looked back for the last time. All the pterodactyls were staring at us and Raphael was looking at me with his big eyes.
Good luck Alex. You’re going to need it.
And with that, we walked out into the unknown. Again!
